Monday Essentials: Victory Day, Harry Potter Cartoons and More

Today is Monday, Aug. 12, 2013 and here are five things to know about the week ahead.

Victory Day: Monday, Aug. 12, 2013 marks Victory Day (or VJ Day), which means that state and municipal offices are closed today, including here in Coventry. Remember, trash collection will be delayed on day for the week. Click here for more VJ Day closing info.

Peak Stargazing Night: The Perseid meteor shower is already underway and will continue through Aug. 24, but the peak viewing will be tonight, Aug. 12, when stargazers may see upward of 60 meteorites flash before them per hour. Click here to learn more.

Free Movie - Admission (PG): On Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 2-4 p.m. and again from 6-8 p.m., the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library (35 Kingstown Rd., Narragansett) will host a free showing of the this year's film, "Admission", which tells the story of Princeton admissions officer, Portia Nathan, who while up for a major promotion, takes a professional risk after she meets a college-bound alternative school kid who just might be the son she gave up years ago in a secret adoption. (Starring Tina Fey & Paul Rudd.)

Wizards and Jedi: On Thursday, Aug. 15, the Narragansett Library will host two sessions of a Harry Potter & Star Wars Cartooning event for children ages 7-14, one from 11 a.m. until noon and the second from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Cartoonist Corinne Adams will display many toys from both series while showing participants how to create comic book covers inspired by their favorite movies. Summer Concert at the Gazebo: Head down to Narragansett on Friday night for an evening of music in the gazebo with the Abbey Road, who will entertain with covers of classic tunes from The Beatles! This free event, sponsored by SoHo Restaurante, will begin at 6 p.m. at Casino Park.at Casino Park.
