Narragansett Town Beach Closed to Swimming Due to High Bacteria Counts

Narragansett Beach is one of seven RI beaches closed to swimming this week because of bacteria levels.

The Rhode Island Department of Health announced Tuesday that it has been determined that waters at Narragansett Town Beach, North Kingstown Town Beach, City Park Beach, Oakland Beach in Warwick, and Barrington Town Beach are unsuitable for swimming due to high bacteria counts.

HEALTH has also recommended that Conimicut Point Beach and Goddard Memorial State Park Beach in Warwick, both closed to swimming on Monday, remain that way until further notice.

Officials will make a recommendation regarding suitability for swimming when the areas are determined to be safe.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Department of Health maintans ongoing testing of local swimming areas for Enterococci bacteria, which can show the presence of fecal matter in the water. Any reading above 104 colony forming units, or cfu, per 100 milliliters of salt water triggers an alert.
