  • On the Blog Post Are You Wearing a Helmet or Being Stupid?

I own and operate a motorcycle. There are times that I may wear a helmet and then I don't, especially if your in a area, like the beach area or up in the mountains where you wish to enjoy nature. Helmet laws, seat belt laws, while all good to promote safety, should be left to the driver for HIS/HER CHOICE! These laws to FORCE people to do this against their will is oppressive and only ends up getting people hung up in the legal system, which Mr. Bottaro is employeed at. I do take offense with these "feel good" pieces of legislation as it just strips more of our freedoms away. What the sponsors of these won't tell you is that the federal government is behind it with bags of money to bribe states to pass their agendas. You have another one coming up to lower the legal drinking level from 0.08 to 0.05! Why? Who put the federal government in charge of the states? The states were here first! The feds also want a vehicle mileage tax imposed because the gasoline tax isn't generating enough revenue to fix the roads. They are also kicking around the idea of "Speed Cameras" like the ones for traffic lights. See what is going on here? You are slowly losing your freedoms to bureaucrats. We have speed laws and people still violate them. You can't legislate personal behavior or morality. In the end, all these laws will do is just turn police into revenue agents and jam up the courts. Is this where we are heading?

Tolls on bridges were originally intended to be used for the debt services and payment on the bonds that built that particular bridge! It was the case for the Mt. Hope Bridge and for the Newport Bridge. The reason RITBA wants the money is because the toll pricing on the Newport Bridge is too low to support the other bridges even though it may be illegal for RITBA to be using those funds for "other purposes."
The state house has been negligent in getting it fiscal house in order to fix the infrastructure in this state. Bridges over the interstate system are in dire need of repair - some are on the verge of being closed.
The state has no economy to speak of and is running on empty. The people keep electing the same morons to the state house and nothing gets done. The state is dying and people are leaving - some with trades that are needed in this state. The state is in a death spiral and no one is addressing it. Go figure!

The Jamestown Bridge cannot be tolled by federal regulations because it is an island and there must be one way off the island without toll. That is the law.

He had better worry about his own butt if the IRS scandal widens. He was named with the rest of those corrupt Senators.

Checkpoints are bad - you don't want to go there. The police are being further powered by more feel good legislation. It appears that the seat belt mess will be on us again. The over zealous state police will be out on their campaigns again, harassing people on belts, whether your wearing them or not. We are turning this state into a police state! Remember, we had this same mess in Europe in WWII. Read your history books - you don't want to go there!

They were using check points for the seat belts last year on Rt. 95 exits. Troopers shining flashlights in cars checking for seat belts being buckled. Talk about a police state! I told them to get lost.

Unless they side track that seat belt bill in the Senate, you will see some more of those checkpoints to make sure you are wearing your seat belt. Talk about big brother! I have a sign I made for my car. It's says LAWYER - leave me alone. Unless there is really something in violation, a mere checkpoint is against the law and the RI Supreme Court affirmed it.

Until the voters of this state get off their butts and throw out those in power, this state will continue to limp along. We are the laughing stock of New England and probably the country. We have many great assets to turn this economy around but we have one big obstacle in the way - GOVERNMENT! We have sky high taxes, we have over 1,400+ regulations on small businesses and we have too much wasteful spending! You know you have a problem when Seekonk, Mass is booming with their strip malls almost full, three multi-bay gas stations similar to the ones you see on a major interstate within walking distance of each other and all of them have Rhode Islanders as primary customers. The legislature refuses to accept the problem but instead keeps making more government agencies to address problems. We are the smallest state in the union with the most government! And you wonder why business won't relocate here?

True economic development is for the government to get the hell out of the way! Cut the sky high taxes, Cut the 1,400+ regulations on small business and Cut the wasteful spending in this state. The street sweeper is a joke. The welcome mat is already out and it reads "we are a not-friendly business state." Take your business elsewhere!

This bureaucrat continues to romp on the environment. Perhaps he is Rhode Island's version of Al Gore! Politicians cannot control the environment! That is fact. This guy is no environmentalist - he is carrying the water of the EPA and others.
The best thing this guy can do for RI is resign.
