ReplyGreat tips for parents! If parents can remain flexible with their plans (it always helps to have extra adult hands) then families can enjoy all that South Kingstown has to offer.

ReplyWhy don't you propose price control legislation...or that we only utilize American oil...or that cars run on a gasoline-ethanol blend...whoops...did that one and it didn't work out so well. I recommend spending resources innovating and finding solutions rather than social engineering (reference the 10th amendment).

ReplyTaxes are not too low. The spending is out of control. Moody's just downgraded RI's outlook to negative. Mr. Chafee, please take the gun away from the head of RI's economy.

ReplyThe Governors tax proposal makes him only 1 of 7 Governors proposing tax increases this year...given that we are in a very slow recovery following The Great Recession, it is important that he NOT step on the brakes and slow the economy.

ReplyLisa-Beth / Dana, thank you for your comments. It is great for parents to have a range of choices. This way, they can match a program to their child's interests. After re-reading the article, I realized that I did not indicate that I had children that are 8 and younger in mind (the article is Learning Young). At these early ages, it is especially important to have a program that caters to the young child (secure facility, anti-bullying awareness, trained and educated staff, developmentally appropriate activities). Here is to a safe and fun summer 2011.

ReplySK is all that and more. Consider all of those wearing scrubs at the local hospital, donning lab coats at the pharmacies, wielding chalk at the local university, launching start-ups in the local business incubators, and moving bits on the internet. Right on for the blue collar worker, but consider the white collar, green collar, and gold collar workers as well. This eclectic mix is often not found in such a rural setting. Enjoy the diversity of quaint SK.

ReplyCheryl, I think the rule of thumb is - lunch break after six hours, and a coffee break a day for every two kids. Great article.

ReplyKathy, those kind of surprises are not fun. Some school districts are utilizing on-line attendance, homework, and test tracking tools. While not a substitute for face-to-face communication, it allows closer monitoring of on-going student performance.

Jason, good analogy. A partnership is critical. Parents, teachers, and friends (teammates, using your analogy) are the closest connections to all of the kids in the community.
