Holton Dismissed From URI Following Additional Charges

According to the university, basketball player Jonathan Holton has been charged with robbery by Miami-Dade Police, and also faces additional Rhode Island charges.

According to a press release from the University of Rhode Island, freshman Jonathan Holton is no longer registered with the university following additional charges two days after he was charged with felony video voyeurism. According to URI officials, Holton was arrested at 7:54 a.m. today at his campus residence and charged with being a fugitive from justice in connection with a Miami-Dade Police warrant. URI police said that when executing a search warrant Tuesday, related to the video voyeurism charges, they seized a laptop computer from Holton’s apartment. URI police said a check of the computer’s serial number revealed that it had been reported stolen from a URI dorm common area on July 26, 2011. Based on the information, URI police …

"Holton Dismissed From URI" is misleading!!! According to March 30th ProJo he "withdrew" from URI.... Since when has URI had the moral courage to dismiss a "hoops" or other sports "star" for serious multiple charges????..where there's smoke, there's fire....One of the"few bright ligts on a Rams team"(ProJo)....URI doesn't seem to have very high standards....   more ›

The Abyss: Rams Lose Again in OT [VIDEO]

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team loses another game in overtime, despite St. Bonaventure losing its two best players to foul trouble.

KINGSTON – St. Bonaventure’s Youssou Ndoye only played 11 minutes on Wednesday night, but unfortunately for the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball game, he saved his best effort for the final 1:38. After his team lost starting frontcourt players Andrew Nicholson and Da’Quan Cook to foul trouble, two players who had combined for 34 points and 12 rebounds, Ndoye came off the bench to inexplicably dominate the final 90 seconds. Ndoye stormed the lane with 1:17 left, with Matthew Wright finding him on the cut for an easy, thunderous dunk. He followed it up with a steal with 26 seconds remaining, and a vicious stuff of a drive by URI’s Mike Powell with 14 seconds left. In the same 90-second stretch to close out overtime, the Rams …

[VIDEO] Rams Have No Defense for Dukes

Duquesne scores at will on the fastbreak off Rhody turnovers and in the paint, using 16 assists and a near triple-double from T.J. McConnell.

KINGSTON – A poor defensive effort by the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team led to 40 points in the paint for an undersized Duquesne University, and another loss Saturday afternoon, 78-71. The Dukes (11-7, 2-2 Atlantic 10) used crisp passing from point guard T.J. McConnell to score at will against the Rams. McConnell almost finished with a triple-double, scoring 16 points, dishing out eight assists and grabbing eight rebounds in 36 minutes. Rhody (3-15, 0-3 Atlantic 10) stayed within single digits for much of the second half, and only trailed by two, 41-39, at the break. However, this was solely due to Duquesne’s poor shooting from the line – The Dukes finished 19-for-33 from the line, letting the Rams stay in the game until…

[VIDEO] Spiders Shred Rams With Outside Shooting

URI gets within three late in the first half, but 63.6 percent shooting from 3-point range in the second half by Richmond lets the Spiders pull away, 70-53.

KINGSTON – The final margin of victory for the Richmond University men’s basketball team was 17 points against the University of Rhode Island on Saturday night, but it could have been even worse for Rams’ fans. For example, Richmond (10-7, 1-1 Atlantic 10) only shot 40 percent from 3-point range and 48.1 percent from the field in the first half. Considering they shot 63.6 percent and 57.7 percent from those ranges in the second, it could have been a 30+ point win for the Spiders with a little luck. Darien Brothers finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-for-16 shooting. He was the only Spider to really have to create his own shot, as Francis Martel, Darrius Garrett and Kendall Anthony feasted off a soft Rhody defense and drives by …

Hi Jack - The tournament starts at 6 each night, meaning the second game is probably around 7:45, or 15 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. So, we're both kind of correct? I'm not sure if the start time for the second game (Thursday night) switches depending on who wins on the first night.   more ›

VIDEO: Rams Misery Continues; Flummoxed by Yale

The Bulldogs are efficient from the line, hitting 19-of-22 shots and getting a key five-point play in the final 30 seconds to beat the Rams 68-65.

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team found a new way to lose on Sunday afternoon, as a five-point play in the final 30 seconds sunk the Rams against Yale. The Bulldogs (8-2) pulled out a 68-65 win, thanks largely to the play by guard Austin Morgan with 18 seconds remaining. According to URI head coach Jim Baron, he was told by referees that Morgan’s 3-point shot – which went in – and a foul by Rayvon Harris were simultaneous. Harris bulldozed through a pick, committing an obvious foul, however, Baron and others on the coaching staff claimed it happened well before the shot. With the ref’s call, the 3 by Morgan counted, plus forward Jeremiah Kreisberg got two foul shots. He sank both, to give Yale a three-point …

Live Blog: URI in the TicketCity Legends Classic

Join us live on Patch for all three games!

Friday 9 p.m. – The Rams turned away a scrappy second half effort by Hofstra Friday evening in the nightcap of the TicketCity Legends Classic, winning 85-73. After holding a double-digit lead for most of the first half, URI saw Hofstra chip it down to six by the half’s conclusion. Hostra got within two in the second, but the Rams pushed the lead back up, thanks to Hofstra turnovers and clutch shooting from seniors Orion Outerbridge and Jamal Wilson. While some of their shots were ill-advised, they went in. Outerbridge finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals. Wilson had 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal. The Rams turned Hofstra over 17 times, and could have put the game out of reach more …

UPDATE: Rams Handle RIC in Exhibition

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team pulls away in the second half, winning 79-63.

11 p.m. -- Thanks to 15 points from Orion Outerbridge and Nikola Malesevic, and 14 from freshman Jonathan Holton, the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team started its season off with a 79-63 exhibition win against Division III Rhode Island College. Although the final score suggests an easy Rams' win, it took URI about 30 minutes to pull away from RIC. The Anchormen shot 41.7 percent from 3-point range to stay in the game the first half, before the Rams clamped down with a more effective press in the second. As expected, backcourt play could be a concern for URI early in the season, before transfers Andre Malone and Billy Baron become eligible. The starting guards - senior Jamal Wilson and freshman Mike Powell - combined for …
