URI Football Player Donates Bone Marrow

John Greenhalgh follows in his brother’s footsteps and donates bone marrow to save a life.

Release courtesy of GoRhody. John Greenhalgh sat in the recovery room of the Rhode Island Blood Center on Tuesday, Nov. 20. He had bandage wraps around both arms, and a curious stranger sitting across the room asked if Greenhalgh had given blood from both arms at the same time. No, Greenhalgh explained. He had just completed a bone marrow donation that would help save the life of an adult male who had been diagnosed with leukemia. In the process, Greenhalgh became the fourth person from URI athletics in the last 18 months to be an exact marrow match for a stranger through the Rhode Island football team's annual bone marrow drive. The man – himself a frequent blood donor – was so moved by Greenhalgh's selfless act that he registered to be a…

URI Pres: Football 'Fixable,' Commuter Rail Needed, Instate Numbers Lower

David Dooley addresses a wide range of questions at the university's annual media breakfast.

URI President David Dooley told members of the press Wednesday morning that the university's football program – coming off an 0-11 season – "has a problem and we're going to fix it." "That's bringing to Rhode Island students we'd want anyway," said Dooley. "If you look at the money we spend outside of scholarships, a good deal of that budget is provided by the operations of football itself," he said. The football program will need to bring in more money going forward, he said. On a regional issue, Dooley said he thought bringing…

URI's Hansen Signs With Atlanta Falcons

The Providence native led the Rams in tackles this year with 114.

KINGSTON – Former Rhode Island linebacker Matt Hansen signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday. Hansen will report to Falcons camp on Friday to compete for roster spot at training camp. "I am so excited for this opportunity," Hansen said. "I couldn't be more excited to get down to Atlanta and compete at the professional level." The Providence native finished his career at URI as the school's all-time leading tackler with 401 stops, surpassing Paul Picciotti's career mark which was set back in 2001. "I'm so happy Matt has opportunity to compete at the next level," URI head coach Joe Trainer said. "Matt is one of the best players I have ever coached and I know he will do great." In 2010, Hansen led the Rams with 114 …

Narragansett Police Log: May 1, 2011

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the Narragansett Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

URI Football Players Among Seven Arrested for Disorderly Conduct Following Small Scale Pot Deal; Additional Arrests Made in South Kingstown Seven people were arrested shortly after 6 p.m. on May 1 after police determined that a fight ensued following a marijuana transaction. According to police, a 58-year-old Narragansett woman reported several individuals chasing after a car, and one man hanging from the car, on Beach Plum Road. As a result, she called police.
