Hurricane Sandy Updates – Wednesday, Oct. 31

South Kingstown and Narragansett continue to clean up in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

7:06 p.m. – Okay folks, we’re going to be finishing up with the updates soon. I’m pretty beat, and I need to get some rest! Thank you to everyone who followed along today. To tie up some loose ends: - As of 7 p.m., Narragansett still hadn’t made a decision about whether school was on or off. When that does come down the pike, we will announce it on our Twitter and Facebook. - Tomorrow, we go back to more of a “normal” news day. While there is still going to be Sandy-related coverage, I think we’ve covered the damage as adequately as we can, and the renovation and rebuilding stories can be parceled out a bit more evenly over the next few days and weeks. So, yes, there will be a police beat tomorrow. Two, in fact, as long as I’m able to make…

@ Gov - Man, I sure hope so. At least the restoration of power everywhere else has a nice cascade effect, and I no longer have to fight for an outlet at the coffee shop.   more ›

Hurricane Sandy Updates – Tuesday, Oct. 30

Day three of our hurricane coverage will focus on the aftermath.

7:51 p.m. – Elizabeth McNamara, our East Greenwich Patch local editor, spent her afternoon in Kingston. Here are some notes from her: - At URI, classes will resume tomorrow, Oct. 31.  Power was out at the Cumberland Farms at Kingston Emporium, but they were open "dawn to dusk" – cash only, no perishables. The traffic lights were out at Upper College and 138. - Melissa Branch on Northup Street lost a tree in her front yard: "I've got great neighbors. They got fire wood and I got the tree out of my driveway!" A photo can be seen in our gallery. - Lauren and Adam Spink, at 68 High Street, were inside their house when the large tree in their front yard fell over, hitting the house. "We heard the roots in the basement," Adam, a contractor, said…

Bohemian Quartet Returns to Towers For Free Performance

Spring to The Towers for strings! The Bohemian Quartet is back by popular demand.

Watching The Bohemian Quartet perform live is like listening to history being preserved. In many ways, this gifted and exhilarating act is simply keeping a rare musical flame alive by taking on the challenging oeuvre of the Romany, or "gypsy" musical tradition. Those of you who've already seen their show know how mesmerizing and captivating it can be. Those who've missed it thus far are in for a treat! You can see them in all their whirling glory 2 p.m. Sunday, at what can only be called a perfect venue for the Providence band, The Towers in Narragansett. Here's a little history: BQ borrowed its name from a quartet formed more than 100 years ago in Czechoslovakia. That group, later called the Czech Quartet, ultimately disbanded in 1934. …

Five Things

5 THINGS: Mr. Rogers, Article Scheduling and Fun Events

Now that the drudgery of Monday is behind us, we can get back to more usual tasks, like counting down to Friday and the weekend.

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Tuesday, March 20, 2012: Town manager’s job is safe, at least for now. The Narragansett Town Council took no formal action on the job of Town Manager at Monday night’s meeting. Although council president Glenna Hagopian brought up what she believed to be budget irregularities, both Grady Miller and fellow councilor Christopher Wilkens fought back against her claims. We will have several stories from Monday’s meeting posted on the site today and tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled for their posting. Spring into Spring at the Guild! That is literally the event’s name today, so I felt the need to make no further additional pithy comments. For $11 (residents) or $14 (non-residents), you and your child …

5 THINGS: Glee-ful Birthday, Storytime and Dancing

It’s the birthday of a great American actress, the Rams are playing, the Mariners are swimming and others are dancing.

Here are the Five Things for Wednesday, February 1, 2012: “Now here’s a little story I’ve got to tell / About three bad brothers you know so well.” Okay, so they will probably not be playing the Beastie Boys for preschoolers at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library today (hopefully). But they will be having storytime at 10:30 a.m. Registration is required, so if you’re a newcomer, make sure you make it there a bit early. If you can’t make it this week, they’re also hosting the event on Feb. 8 and Feb. 15. Recommended ages are 3 to 6, and the event is free. Add some salsa to your weekly routine! Since it is the beginning of the month, now does seem like a good time to mention the weekly dance classes at the Towers. Sessions are $15, but …
