Mariners Overwhelm Prout in 2nd Half for D-II Title

Following a familiar script, Narragansett takes control in the second half against Prout with scorching offense, 56-43.

KINGSTON – Using drives from guard Maggie Salomone to setup center Hannah Maymon, and transition layups from Chelsea Sahagian, the Narragansett Mariners distanced themselves from Prout in the second half en route to a 56-43 Division II girls’ basketball title win against Prout at the Ryan Center on Sunday afternoon. Narragansett stretched a 28-20 halftime lead with a 21-8 run over the first eight minutes of the second half and never looked back. Over the final 7:13, the Mariners killed the clock and controlled the game via Salomone’s dribbling. Prout didn’t have much of an answer for the speedy senior point guard. While she struggled a bit with her outside shot, not managing to hit a 3, she still finished with a game-high 16 points, and a …

Gansett vs. Prout For D-II Title Today

The Mariners look for a second straight Division II girls’ basketball title, while Prout will try for two in three years. Also, several area private school students can win girls’ basketball titles today with Prout and La Salle.

Something will give in the Division II girls’ basketball final today, as the high-powered Narragansett Mariners’ offense clashes with the tough man-to-man defense of the Prout Crusaders. Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m. at the Ryan Center, on the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus. We will be hosting a live chat for the game. No. 2 Narragansett (18-4, 14-2 Division II-South) has had a relatively easy path to the finals, at least compared to the other top seeds in the tournament that were felled in the quarter and semifinals by Prout. The Mariners opened with a 55-44 preliminary round win against No. 15 Mt. Hope, followed by a 54-48 win against No. 7 East Greenwich that featured a 25-0 run. Narragansett overcame a sluggish first half to …

Hopefully the "penalties" called last night won't discourage physical play tonight. At least Narragansett finally has a real "home game"; their last game at Boss was January 12th.   more ›

Prout Shocks Top-Seeded Rogers

The Crusaders never panic and execute down the stretch in a 49-43 upset of No. 1 Rogers in the Division II playoffs.

PROVIDENCE – Balanced scoring and tough defense led to a 49-43 upset of No. 1 Rogers at the hands of No. 8 Prout in the Division II girls’ basketball playoff quarterfinals at Rhode Island College. The Crusaders trailed 7-1 and 16-7 in the first half, but rallied to trail only 23-18 at the half. Rogers got up by nine at various points in the second half, but couldn’t shake Prout or get up by double digits. Rogers led 32-24 early in the second half, and 34-26, but Prout refused to fade away. The Crusaders went on a 12-2 run, capped by senior Brittany Donovan banking in a 3-point shot, to take a 38-36 lead. When asked what he thought as Donovan launched the 3, Prout head coach Phil Quinn said, “No no no no no no!” After the game, Donovan …

Interscholastic Bracketology

It's never too early to take a look at the boys' basketball standings, and conjure up a forecast for the March Madness State Tournament.

Unlike previous years in which divisional basketball tournaments were played with 10 teams in each of the three divisions, this season the Rhode Island Interscholastic League has decided for boys basketball to forego the Division-specific tourneys altogether, with post-season play limited to a state-wide, all-division single elimination contest. Seeding of the 32-team state tournament will take the win-loss results of the divisional regular season into account. Division I wins receive full credit, while Division II and Division III are worth 80 percent and 60 percent. Regular season division champions will get a bonus point for seeding purposes. Although the season is still early, four tiers of teams have emerged. The first tier is the …

Five-goal outburst pushes Prout to victory

Crusaders skate by Rebels 7-3

Last week South Kingstown defeated Prout 3-1 in a thriller. Last night, Prout returned the favor with authority. The Crusaders exploded for five goals over a span of 4:21 to turn a nail biter into a rout as they downed the Rebels 7-3 at Boss Ice Arena. Four different Crusaders scored during the outburst in the third period. “They’re relentless,” Prout coach John Gaffney said of his forwards. “You could see the top nine forwards we have, they’re quick. That helps out a lot in the forechecking and getting back on defense. They’re quick. They’re talented. When we had a little push in the third period we had one goal from one line and another goal from another line. It’s contagious.” The Crusaders led 2-0 after two periods, with goals from …

Boys Soccer: Crusaders Overwhelm Mariners 3-1

Thanks to a second half surge, the Crusaders deal a serious blow the Mariners’ playoff hopes.

NARRAGANSETT – After a surprising first half that saw the Mariners take a 1-0 lead, the Prout Crusaders roared back, scoring three goals at point blank range and winning 3-1 Friday afternoon. Narragansett (4-8-2, 4-8-2 Division II-South) took an early lead on a run by senior Aaron Libman. Beating a defender down the left sideline, the goalie came out to defend him. He slipped a shot on the ground to the right, past the diving goal, to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. They held the lead for the rest of the half, despite a ferocious Prout (10-3-1, 10-3-1 Division II-South) attack, thanks to some outstanding work in goal by junior Zachary McKanna. He finished with 15 saves, seven in the first half. However, Prout head coach Timothy Ryan said his…
