Bill Submitted to Bolster Port Marketing

The bill, submitted by Deb Ruggiero and co-sponsored by Donna Walsh and Teresa Tanzi, tries to improve port marketing efforts.

Release courtesy the Legislative Press Bureau. Rhode Island’s ports are well-positioned to become greater economic engines for the state. The state’s significant coastline, well-developed transportation systems and opportune location between New York and Boston are all the right ingredients, and after a recent dredging project, the Port of Davisville is now the seventh largest auto-port and one of the fastest-growing ports in North America. The growth of Rhode Island’s ports as drivers of the state’s economy must continue, says Rep. Deborah Ruggiero, and to help promote them, she has introduced legislation to create a body to collectively market them. The Rhode Island Port Marketing Collaborative act (2013-H 5614) would bring together …

LETTER: Wilkens Asks For Your Vote

Candidate Chris Wilkens wants your vote for District 34 on Nov. 6.

To the editor, I believe that the only legitimate reason to run for General Assembly in 2012 is out of an overwhelming concern for the now and future of our community and state. This is why I am running and ask for your vote. We must stop drifting from crisis to crisis without a vision, sense of purpose or urgency to fix the problems that have plagued our state for so long. All of my campaign literature and yard signs all have the motto – “Restore Rhode Island."   I am committed to finding solutions that will help make our state a place where people and business move to, not from... Where the tax burden is among the lowest, not the highest... Where employment opportunities for our children are plentiful, not rare… And where the …

LETTER: SK’s Cotter Supports Tanzi

The chairwoman of the South Kingstown School Committee is endorsing Teresa Tanzi for another term.

To the editor, It is important to hold incumbents accountable for their elected service; it is also important to recognize incumbents who merit another term. This election year, Teresa Tanzi is an incumbent who merits being re- elected to serve District 34 in the RI General Assembly House of Representatives. In my experience, Teresa clearly demonstrated a pro-active approach.  She could be seen at school committee and Town Council meetings as well as other community meetings throughout her two-year term. She was accessible, constituent concerns were listened to and heard, and legislative remedies were pursued. As a freshman, Teresa quickly established herself as a credible legislator. She was deeply involved in the issues sponsoring and co…

Woodmansee Seeks Absentee Ballot

Michael Woodmansee, who was convicted of killing Jason Foreman in 1975, has requested an absentee ballot.

According to The Providence Journal and other media outlets, convicted child killer Michael Woodmansee is seeking an absentee ballot for the November election. In 1975, Woodmansee confessed to killing Jason Foreman, and was sentenced to 40 years. However, he only served 28 years and was set to be released before voluntarily committing himself. Before committing himself, news of his release caused residents to protest. According to The Journal, Woodmansee was transferred from the ACI to the Eleanor Slater Hospital in September 2011. WPRO’s John DePetro interviewed John Foreman, the father of Jason, yesterday afternoon. John Foreman said it was ridiculous that Woodmansee was being allowed to vote. For the audio, click here. According to The …

Release courtesy of the Legislative Press and Public Information Bureau. Rep. Teresa Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narragansett) will join Wakefield Elementary School students tomorrow in celebrating International Walk to School Day. The event will include a parade of children who walk or bike to school that day, as well as the unveiling of two new bicycle racks acquired through a legislative grant secured by Tanzi. The media is invited to attend, and the event will take place rain or shine. Participating students are being asked to gather in the municipal parking lot behind Main Street, across the river from the school, by 8:15 a.m. From there, a parade of students on foot and bicycle will cross the river via the footbridge, …

Election Preview: Wilkens Not Running For Council

Councilor Christopher Wilkens will challenge for Teresa Tanzi’s seat, and the School Committee is practically elected already.

NARRAGANSETT – Despite the absence of a current councilor running for another office, it will be a crowded town council race this year, with as many as 12 candidates on the ballot. According to paperwork filed at Narragansett Town Hall for the November election, current councilor Christopher Wilkens will not seek re-election. Instead, he will be the Republican challenge to the R.I. House seat currently held by Teresa Tanzi, assuming he bests Stephen C. Tetzner in a primary. The four other incumbent councilors – Glenna Hagopian, David Crook, Susan Cicilline Buonanno and Alisa Trainor Fleet – are running for re-election, along with eight others. See the chart below for a full accounting of all the races. In contrast, barring a huge write-in …

One thing I don't like about Chris. In many a town meetings he always changed the motion to fit his own needs. He just can't vote 'no'. He always re-words the motion to fit his own needs and wishes? Tanzi Will Seek Re-Election

The Rhode Island House of Representatives member will seek a second term.

Representative Teresa Tanzi has announced that she will be seeking re-election to a second term in the House of Representatives from District 34, which includes portions of southern Narragansett, Peace Dale and Wakefield. “I am so honored and proud to serve the people of South County,” Tanzi said.  “It has been a great learning experience and I feel like I am hitting my stride at both the State House and in helping the people of my district. There is so much more work that needs to be accomplished and I am humbly asking for the voters’ support for a second two-year term.” Tanzi, a Democrat, said she has focused on improving the state’s economy, assisting the fishing industry, and protecting the quality of life interests that are so …

Tanzi Grateful for Changes to ‘Good Time’ Laws

Once Governor Lincoln Chafee signs legislation, there will be changes to the state’s ‘good time’ prison regulations.

Earlier today, the Rhode Island Senate approved modifications to the state’s “good time” statute – the bill now just needs to be signed by Governor Lincoln Chafee. One of the bill’s authors, Teresa Tanzi, submitted the following op-ed. In light of last year’s release from prison of murderer Michael Woodmansee, it was clear that Rhode Island’s system of awarding time off to prisoners for good behavior was too generous to people who had committed very serious crimes. After learning last year that Woodmansee would be released after serving just 28 years of a 50-year sentence, 40 to serve, for the heinous murder of 5-year-old Jason Foreman in 1975 (fortunately, he later agreed to remain in voluntary institutional confinement), I filed …
