Exeter Woman Pleads to Pill Possession; 12th Plea

Erica Young, 29, is ordered to serve probation after pleading to charges of possession of Oxycodone following a shoplifting complaint at Shaw’s.

Erica Young, 29, of Exeter, pleaded no contest on Dec. 3 to a South Kingstown police charge of felony drug possession. Superior Court Associate Justice Melanie Thunberg ordered Young to serve 18 months probation and an 18-month suspended sentence, to complete substance abuse counseling and to pay $788 in assessments. According to South Kingstown police, on Jan. 19 they received a complaint of shoplifting at Shaw’s in Wakefield. Store security told police that Young was still in the store, and that they had seen her on tape hiding goods on her person. Police said that…

Shaw's Cutting Jobs Across New England

Sources say 700 jobs are cut across a number of stores in New England.

Shaw's and Star Market are planning to make some cuts to their workforce in New England, estimated at as many as 700, according to sources.  Steve Sylven, a company spokesman, confirmed that local stores will be impacted. The company is not disclosing store specific job cuts, said Sylven. “A decision of this nature is never easy, but after careful evaluation, it is unfortunately the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business, reduce expenses and reinvest in more customer-facing initiatives,” said Mike Stigers, Shaw’s president. “As we continue to look at the best ways to achieve success, we recognized an opportunity to align our workforce to more effectively serve the marketplace by scheduling team members more …
