[VIDEO] Smithfield Turns Aside Rebels for State Title

The Sentinels take advantage of an early second half game, and hang on in a physical game against South Kingstown in the girls’ soccer title game.

PROVIDENCE – A goal from Alex Jenkins about 40 seconds into the second half proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win in the girls’ soccer state title game for the Smithfield Sentinels against the South Kingstown Rebels at Rhode Island College on Monday. In a game that was physical and featured aggressive play from both teams, Jenkins’ goal sparked a brief skirmish near South Kingstown’s net. After referees broke up the scrum, Jenkins was given a yellow card, but Smithfield weathered her absence for a few minutes and the lead held for the rest of the second half. South Kingstown didn’t get many chances, thanks to the stout Sentinels’ defense and midfield play. Smithfield struck early in the first half as well, with senior sweeper and …

The Purple beat No. 8 Smithfield, the defending Division II champs, 1-0 in the quarterfinals, and No. 4 Westerly 3-0 in the semifinals. Narragansett lost 4-0 at Classical on Oct. 9. Rebels Match With Cumberland Ends In Stalemate

Both teams had good scoring opportunities, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

It’s wasn’t too surprising that Monday night’s girls’ soccer game between South Kingstown High and Cumberland High Monday night ended in a 1-1 draw. The two teams were equally out-of-sync in the first half and equally aggressive in the second half, and with the exception of a few long shots by both teams, which weren’t serious threats to get past the goalkeepers, most of the first half was played toward the middle of the field. Both teams struggled to put together a series of passes. “This was Cumberland’s first game of the season and our first game was played in pouring rain at Bay View, which should have been called,” said South Kingstown head coach Jim Kelly. “That was a big reason why the two teams had trouble getting into a rhythm …
