Runners and walkers go five miles in memory of lost friends and relatives.
Winds were stiff and spirits high Oct. 23 at the 13th annual Get to the Point Memorial Run and Walk at Salty Brine State Beach in Galilee. Participants gathered before the race in front of Champlin's Seafood, the event's base of operations. Some stretched and ran back-and-forth in preparation, while others chatted with friends and family above the noise of wind, the hum of a nearby wind turbine and blaring music. For some of the assembled the event was about exercise, competition and a good time, but for others it was about lost friends. Members of the girls' and boys' Cross Country team run hard and come in 8th and 9th in state finals held at Goddard State Park Saturday.
Goddard State Park in Warwick was the picture-perfect setting Saturday for the Boys' and Girls' Middle School State Cross Country Finals. More than 1,400 middle school and junior high students from across the state ran in four different races along the challenging two-mile course. It was designed to keep students on their toes, but it was one of the prettiest routes any have run all season long. Pier School coaches Debbie Ranaldi and Cathy Giard came to the state finals with great enthusiasm and hope for their crew of about 65 runners, and by the time the last determined student crossed the finish line, they were not disappointed.
