Training is key, of course, but there are other ways to ensure race readiness.
I know a lot of people who have recently taken up running: a cousin looking to lose the last of her pregnancy weight, a friend who was inspired by her husband's marathon training and another friend who wanted to mix up her cardio routine, just to name a few. I love this little running boom going on around me because it means I get to talk about something I love with an even wider group of people. Many have come to me for advice, and I have noticed that road races are a common concern among these "newbie" runners around me.
