Blood Drives Scheduled To Make Up Missed Donations

The Rhode Island Blood Center is holding several blood drives this week.

Thanks to the Blizzard of 2013's traffic bans and power outages, the Rhode Island Blood Center missed about 600 blood donations, and they need your help to avoid running out. The organization is asking donors, particularly platelet donors, to consider donating blood as early as possible this week, helping to avoid a blood shortage. “We lost two days to the blizzard and a quarter of our state was without power, causing lost blood drives and donation days,” said Frank Prosnitz, the Rhode Island Blood Center’s communications manager. “Not all power has been restored, jeopardizing some blood drives and certainly diverting donors’ attention to their own immediate needs." But, those factors haven't diminished the daily demand for up to 280 pints…

Wakefield Elementary Hosts Marrow Registration Drive

Residents are encouraged to join Be The Match, to help save lives.

Help save a life. On Oct. 25, Wakefield Elementary School is hosting a marrow donor registry drive to raise awareness about the need for marrow donors. Potential donors can take the first step to save a life between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. Registration requires paperwork and a cheek swab sample taken from the inside of the mouth. Most donations, if you later match a patient, are done through an automated blood donation. Annually 10,000 new patients depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a matching marrow donor who will save their life. Most people (70 percent) will not have a matching donor in their family. Sadly, only five out of every 10 searching patients receive the lifesaving transplant they so desperately …

Five Things

5 THINGS: Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, It's Back To Work I Go...

Shake off the Monday doldrums with some of these events.

Here are the Five Things for Monday, January 30, 2012: Suggest an event! As usual, our events calendar is a bit light, since it's Monday. Typically, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of events scheduled right in the beginning of the work week. Two of last week's Monday Five Things still apply – there is a blood drive today and you can sign up for free Everbridge town emergency alerts. Unfortunately, it is not again TAT's birthday. “Either you bring the water to Narragansett or you bring Narragansett to the water.” Hopefully, doesn't town council work session doesn't actually resemble Chinatown, one of my favorite movies. But the town council is discussing the water and wastewater rates with the Pioneer Consulting Group at 6:30 p.m. …

5 THINGS: There Are No Sports Today

If you dislike when sporting events are included in Five Things, then congrats! This is the edition for you, except that not much else is happening.

Here are the Five Things for Monday, January 23, 2012: There are no sports today, or rather, much of anything. According to the RIIL, there are no sporting events today, and the middle school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are also done with their respective seasons. Frankly, our events calendar for today is also pretty sparse, so uh, if we’re missing something, let us know in the comments. As a result, we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit for this Five Things, so please don’t judge. “I vant your blood!” One thing you can do today, and many other days of the week, is to give blood at the South County Donor Center of the Rhode Island Blood Center on Woodruff Avenue. It’s near Rite Aid and next to Subway, where my buddies Steve …
