A major low pressure system will push up the East Coast this week, stirring up the Atlantic and producing overhead high waves. The fun starts on Thursday (1/12) with strong E winds building waves from chest to head high by the end of the day. On Friday (1/13) the winds switch to the SW, increase to 40 mph and begin grooming the overhead high rollers. Saturday (1/14) marks the end of the chaos, and this week’s best bet, as WNW winds tame chest to overhead high waves at East-facing beaches. Those strong winds will knock down what’s left of the waves on Sunday, leaving us with clean knee high peelers. Monday goes flat and then the whole cycle starts over again on Tuesday. This week will start off calm, but a system cruising well off the coast on Thursday will push some well in toward the coast by the weekend. This week’s best bet will be Saturday (1/7), with waist to stomach high waves and offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Sunday has the potential for some small leftovers before the surf falls flat again on Monday. There is potential for building swell on Tuesday, but as always, that’s a long way off and subject to change. The water temperature is beginning to plummet, but on the plus side, sunset is finally starting to occur later. The increase in daylight hours will be slow at first, but soon you can look forward to after-work sessions instead of driving home in the dark after missing a day of swell. This week’s best bet is Wednesday (12/14), with waist high waves and light offshore winds at South-facing beaches. Friday (12/16) may pan out as well, with knee high waves and clean conditions. We’re being treated to a rather rare occurrence this week – Tropical Storm Sean! A massive low pressure system off the coast of Florida has formed enough to get a name. Sean will cruise on up the coast well off to sea, sending in swell from the SW. As the winds switch around Thursday night, get ready for strong offshore winds on Friday (11/11) and Saturday (11/12). With waist to chest high waves, they’re this week’s best bet. Unfortunately the winds don’t look to be cooperating, so despite the better waves coming on Friday (10/14) and Saturday (10/15), this week’s best bet looks like Sunday (10/16), when the winds switch around to the West. After the pleasant surprise of Hurricane Ophelia, which reached Category 4 status offshore and cruised by us last weekend, it unfortunately looks like we have run out of tropical wave-makers. The season isn’t quite over, but the outlook doesn’t look good. It sounds like a good weekend to scrap off dirty summer wax and put on a fresh coat of “cool” wax. And remember, if you surf near Pt. A huge low pressure system centered over the Great Lakes will dump rain on us for the foreseeable future, but also fortunately churn up some S wind swell for the weekend. A stalled low directly overhead will keep winds light on Sunday (9/25), making it this week’s best bet. In hurricane news, Tropical Storm Ophelia is currently brewing. Her projected path will sweep near the Dominican Republic on Monday, but there’s no telling where she will turn from there or if she will increase in strength. And remember, if you surf near Pt.
