Playoffs Start Tonight for SK, Gansett

The Mariners host a Division II game, while Prout hosts Wednesday. The Rebels are at Portsmouth tonight.

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League has released brackets for the Division I, Division II and Division III girls’ basketball playoffs, and both Narragansett and South Kingstown are in action tonight. Division I South Kingstown (7-11 Division I) is seeded No. 9, and as a result, travels to No. 8 Portsmouth (8-10 Division I) for a preliminary round game at 7 p.m. The two teams have vastly different styles. While the Rebels prefer to go inside as often as possible, the Patriots regularly take 20 shots a game from 3-point range. Despite the different styles though, both teams lacked the offensive consistency of the better Division I teams in the regular season. The winner of Tuesday’s game doesn’t have an easy road from there – They get a …

SPORTS: Prout Falters, Gansett vs. EG for Seeding

With the basketball seasons winding down, several local teams are jockeying for position.

As usual, playoff seeding for the Division II girls’ basketball could come down to a grudge match between Narragansett and East Greenwich. The game starts at 7 p.m. at East Greenwich High School. The Mariners are 13-2 in Division II play, and the Avengers, at 12-3, need a win to force a tiebreaker for the regular season division crown. According to The Providence Journal, on Tuesday the Mariners beat West Warwick 51-37. However, the Avengers beat Prout (9-6 Division II) the same night on layup by Keri Pallister for a 46-45 win. Narragansett won the Division II title in 2011-12, although with a much different roster. Mercedes Harris, a dominant center and the daughter of a University of Rhode Island men’s basketball assistant coach, led the…

5 THINGS: You Know, Just Coffee Talk, No Big Whoop

Join me at Cool Beans at noon, or check out these other wonderful events this weekend.

Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 24, 2012, and the two weekend days: Cawfee chat. I’ll be hosting a low-key event today, and by “hosting” I mean “sitting around at a local coffee place.” I’ll be at Cool Beans at noon, and sticking around until 1 p.m. at the least. Feel free to swing by and discuss the important (or not so important) news of the day. (Next week will be Coffee Connection, and if you have any other suggestions for me, feel free to send them to Stephen.greenwell@patch.com.) Take me down to the Paradise City Park where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. Tonight is the opening night for the Contemporary Theater Company’s Paradise Park at the Towers. The performance starts at 7 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m., …

5 THINGS: Danger! Star Wars References Inside!

If you don’t believe in the Force, well, don’t be such a muggle.

Here are the Five Things for Thursday, February 23, 2012: “There is a great disturbance in the Force… It’s as if a million voices cried out, because vacation is more than half over.” Maury Loontjens Memorial Library continues its week of fun for the kids during February vacation today. From 11 a.m. to noon, cartoonist Corinne Adams will show your kids how to draw their favorite characters from Star Wars and Harry Potter. A show and tell, and a prize drawing, will also be held. Pre-registering is advised, so call the library at 789-9507. “There is no civility, only politics.” – Chancellor Palpatine. At town hall tonight, the Land Conservancy Trust meets at 5:30 p.m. The Zoning Board of Review meets at 7 p.m. Mr. Palpatine will not be at …

5 THINGS: Iguanas, Politics and Barrymore – A Deadly Mix

Thankfully, I’m talking about three different events. Hopefully, the three won’t mix – you wouldn’t want to cross the streams.

Here are the Five Things for Wednesday, February 22, 2012: CRICKEY! While there probably won’t be any crocs, there will be other reptiles at Maury Loontjens Memorial Library today, as it hosts the Bwana Iguana Reptile Adventure. The fun runs from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and all ages are welcome. If you’d prefer something a bit more mild for your entertainment, there is also the Evening Book Club, which is discussing The Merchant of Venice at 6:30 p.m. It’s by some Shake Spear guy. “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.” – Groucho Marx. I think Groucho is being a bit harsh, but if you’d like to observe local government in action, you have two opportunities …

5 THINGS: It’s Friday So Everything Is Poppin’

It seems like ancient history, when Ice Cube was making rap instead of crap family movies. Hopefully though, today will be a good day for you.

Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 17, 2012, along with some weekend events: A second chance at a polar plunge (and a buffet-style dinner from George’s). The second annual Plunge for Preemies is taking place 3 p.m. Saturday at George’s of Galilee. If you raise at least $50 and pre-register, you get a t-shirt and a free dinner ticket. You can find our event page here, which has links to the pre-registration form and other information. Plunge registration is at 2 p.m., followed by the plunge and a post-plunge party at 3 p.m. Proceeds benefit Project Sweet Peas. The party is all ages, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with tickets $16 in advance or $20 at the door. Children 4 to 10 pay just $10, and kids under 3 are free. Mmm, stone soup! …

Preach on, Matchbox 20. You’re the man, Rob Thomas.

Tonight, Eddie’s BBQ will be serving dinner at from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eddie’s is a food truck and catering service, and while I don’t normally put a lot of commercial activities in these Five Things, heck, it’s BBQ. 5 THINGS: Keep The Abominable Snow Monster At Bay

Some of the information in this article might not be true.

Here are the Five Things for Thursday, February 9: Learn the ancient art of yoga! I believe yoga was first discovered in the Himalayans, which were named thusly because of the Mayans there. (Hence why both of those words end in-ayans.) The stretching helped the Mayans stay warm, and thus they avoided the Yeti and the Abominable Snow Monster of the North. Don’t believe me? Well, I guess you’ll just have to go to the free class at 6 p.m. today at Maury Loontjens Memorial Library to get information to refute me. I’m pretty sure I’ve got it down pat though. TODAY, TODAY! There is a performance of Annie Jr. at the high school today – not tomorrow, tomorrow. For more information, check out our story here. Sporting results are indeed sporting. …

5 THINGS: Even More References Than Normal!

One band or one movie makes me think of more movies and more bands. Isn’t life funny like that?

Here are the Five Things for Wednesday, February 8, 2012: “Darling don’t you go and cut your hair.” Unfortunately, there is not a Pavement appreciation club meeting at town hall tonight. This meeting is at 6 p.m. and instead is about paving roads… That’s all I’ve got to say about that, since it seems pretty self-explanatory. “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Likewise, “Networking at Noon” is not about Network. (Doing Five Things every day makes me worry that we’re running perilously low on movie and band titles.) Deb Kelso of the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a networking event at noon at the Mews Tavern in Wakefield. The cost is $12, and while RSVPing is recommended, drop-ins are normally OK. “…
