5 THINGS: It’s Friday So Everything Is Poppin’

It seems like ancient history, when Ice Cube was making rap instead of crap family movies. Hopefully though, today will be a good day for you.

Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 17, 2012, along with some weekend events: A second chance at a polar plunge (and a buffet-style dinner from George’s). The second annual Plunge for Preemies is taking place 3 p.m. Saturday at George’s of Galilee. If you raise at least $50 and pre-register, you get a t-shirt and a free dinner ticket. You can find our event page here, which has links to the pre-registration form and other information. Plunge registration is at 2 p.m., followed by the plunge and a post-plunge party at 3 p.m. Proceeds benefit Project Sweet Peas. The party is all ages, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with tickets $16 in advance or $20 at the door. Children 4 to 10 pay just $10, and kids under 3 are free. Mmm, stone soup! …

5 THINGS: It’s Been A Long Day, Always, Ain’t That Right?

Preach on, Matchbox 20. You’re the man, Rob Thomas.

Here are the Five Things for Thursday, February 16, 2012: B-B-Q at the I-N-N. Tonight, Eddie’s BBQ will be serving dinner at from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eddie’s is a food truck and catering service, and while I don’t normally put a lot of commercial activities in these Five Things, heck, it’s BBQ. Go get some. Plus, they’re based out of Narragansett, according to Eddie’s website. Sign up for our daily newsletter! Hey, I realize we have a lot of neat features and knick-knacks on the site, so it can be confusing to keep up with it all. Want just one simple, easy to read daily digest? 5 THINGS: Something Something Something Valentine’s Day

More important than Valentine’s Day is a special someone’s birthday. (Hint: Send me cash.)

Here are the Five Things for Tuesday, February 14, 2012: “Love is in the air.” Pretty much every restaurant in town has some sort of Valentine’s Day deal going on, so I’d recommend checking out your favorite to see what they’re offering. As a reminder, you still have a couple days to vote in our poll on the best place in town for a romantic night out – As they say in Providence politics, vote early and vote often! Go and see the movie that makes a mockery of “all-star” collaborations and my birthday! Maury Loontjens Memorial Library is also getting in on the lovey-dovey act, with showings of Valentine’s Day at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The movie is rated PG-13, and frankly, has pretty dismal reviews despite the cast. But hey, sometimes you want …

5 THINGS: Mmm!

Lots of tasty things are going on this weekend. (The Crash Test Dummies would be envious of this article.)

Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 3, 2012, and the weekend: Mmm, pasta! I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but running a hockey program sure is expensive. You essentially have to book ice time at rinks across the state, never mind all of the various equipment you need to buy. So, if you’re looking to pitch in, and want to fill up your stomach in the process, check out the hockey team’s pasta dinner tonight at the Narragansett Community Center. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the cost is $10. There are a variety of raffles being held as well, with the top prize $200 cash. Mmm, Narragansett sports! The girls’ basketball team (12-3, 10-1 Division II-South) will look to rebound (ha ha, get it?) from their first Division II loss of…

5 THINGS: The Cream of the Crop, This Rises to the Top

Gosh, there are a lot of sporting events today, plus Boston Bruins' forward Tyler Seguin turns 20. As a wise man would say, “CELEBRATION! UNITY!”

Here are the Five Things for Tuesday, January 31, 2012: Hoops, hoops, hoops! There are three Narragansett basketball games of note today: Deja vu! Remember how there was a boys' indoor track meet yesterday, but it was freshman states, so there was no guarantee any Mariners were competing? Welcome to Tuesday, where the girls' indoor track team might be competing at freshman states! The meet is up at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, so check with your favorite freshman to see whether they're competing or not. Any athlete that has qualified for the state meet is ineligible for the freshman states. “Some people go to The Prout School and would like news too, you know.” I know that lately, unfortunately, we've been slacking with our…

Interscholastic Bracketology

It's never too early to take a look at the boys' basketball standings, and conjure up a forecast for the March Madness State Tournament.

Unlike previous years in which divisional basketball tournaments were played with 10 teams in each of the three divisions, this season the Rhode Island Interscholastic League has decided for boys basketball to forego the Division-specific tourneys altogether, with post-season play limited to a state-wide, all-division single elimination contest. Seeding of the 32-team state tournament will take the win-loss results of the divisional regular season into account. Division I wins receive full credit, while Division II and Division III are worth 80 percent and 60 percent. Regular season division champions will get a bonus point for seeding purposes. Although the season is still early, four tiers of teams have emerged. The first tier is the …
