Mariners Overwhelm Oakers in 2nd Half

Coventry has no answer for the long limbs of Abby McKanna, and offense from Maggie Salomone and Chelsea Sahagian.

PROVIDENCE – Another game, and another strong run by Narragansett in the second half, led to a second-straight Division II title game berth for the Mariners. The second-seeded Mariners played even with No. 11 Coventry for about a half, but pulled away as the second half started for a 59-42 win Wednesday night in the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs at the Murray Center on the Rhode Island College campus. “The first five minutes of both halves are crucial,” Narragansett head coach Kathryn Mahoney said. “They turn on that high pressure.” Narragansett received balancing scoring from its starting five – Maggie Salomone, Abby McKanna, Chelsea Sahagian, Hannah Maymon and Ali Castrovillari. Except for Alicia Simeone subbing in for about …

Prout Shocks Top-Seeded Rogers

The Crusaders never panic and execute down the stretch in a 49-43 upset of No. 1 Rogers in the Division II playoffs.

PROVIDENCE – Balanced scoring and tough defense led to a 49-43 upset of No. 1 Rogers at the hands of No. 8 Prout in the Division II girls’ basketball playoff quarterfinals at Rhode Island College. The Crusaders trailed 7-1 and 16-7 in the first half, but rallied to trail only 23-18 at the half. Rogers got up by nine at various points in the second half, but couldn’t shake Prout or get up by double digits. Rogers led 32-24 early in the second half, and 34-26, but Prout refused to fade away. The Crusaders went on a 12-2 run, capped by senior Brittany Donovan banking in a 3-point shot, to take a 38-36 lead. When asked what he thought as Donovan launched the 3, Prout head coach Phil Quinn said, “No no no no no no!” After the game, Donovan …

Outdoor Sports Rescheduled Due to Mosquito Threat

With multiple pools of mosquitoes testing positive for EEE and WNV, health officials are urging schools and towns to reschedule outdoor sports.

The Rhode Island Department of Health is urging towns and schools to practice "smart scheduling" of outdoor sports amidst the rising threat of mosquito-borne illnesses. So far this year, five pools of mosquitoes have tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) while another four have tested positive for West Nile Virus across the state. Earlier this month, mosquitoes from a test pool near Wickford tested positive for Highlands J virus. Though the virus does not affect humans, it is an indicator environmental conditions are appropriate for the transmission of other mosquito-borne viruses.  Health officials are now encouraging towns and schools to avoid scheduling sports practices, games and activities around early morning or at …
