NHS Wrestling Receives Grant

According to a press release from the Legislative Press Bureau, Narragansett wrestling will receive a $2,000 grant for new mats.

Release courtesy the Legislative Press Bureau. Sen. James C. Sheehan (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown) has announced the presentation of a legislative grant to the Narragansett High School wrestling team. The grant is the result of a funding request for the program submitted by Sheehan during the previous General Assembly session. As a result, the team will receive a grant of $2,000. The money will be used for a new wrestling mat that will provide better safety for the high school’s student athletes. “While the wrestling team is funded by the Narragansett School System, we all know how tight school funding has become,” Sheehan said. “I am happy to be able to provide this grant money so that the athletes on the team can feel safe …

Narragansett Wrestlers Shine at High School Nationals

Freshman Alex Millen earns All-American status, and sophomore Mike Gallagher also wins several matches.

Virginia Beach, VA – Narragansett wrestlers Michael Gallagher and Alexander Millen had strong showings at the 23rd annual National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. In the center, there were 28 wrestling mats spread out for four days with thousands of fellow wrestlers from all over the country, testing their skills and strength against one another. Gallagher took his 45-2 record as the runner-up in the Rhode Island 160-pound weight class against other sophomores. Unfortunately, Michael’s first match was against the defending 145-pound freshman national champion, Nathan Marek from Oklahoma.   Gallagher tried hard but he could not keep up with Marek’s take downs. Gallagher lost 15-8…

Wrestling Programs Still Going Strong

Several Narragansett and South County wrestlers will be competing at the nationals this week, and the Pier School expands its program.

In early March, two local Rhode Island middle school champions won their New England Wrestling titles, as they defeated the best in New England, while two high school wrestlers plan to take on the nation. James Sauro and Chris Storti, eighth graders at Narragansett Pier School, won the 147 pound and 190 pound weight classes respectively. A handful of other youths also placed or wrestled well in the New Englands. NHS freshman Alex Millen and sophomore Michael Gallagher will take part in the High School Coaches National Tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia during the last week of March. Sauro is the Rhode Island USA wrestling champion and beat Ian Austin of Mountain Valley, ME, 6-4 in the semi-finals. It was his third match of the day, …

(Next week will be Coffee Connection, and if you have any other suggestions for me, feel free to send them to Stephen.greenwell@patch.com.) The freshmen wrestlers both placed in their respective weight classes this past weekend.

Freshmen Alexander Millen and Christian Moroski both earned plaudits this past weekend, after they finished first and second in their respective weight classes at the Rhode Island high school wrestling freshman and junior varsity state meet. Five Things

5 THINGS: Something Something Something Valentine’s Day

More important than Valentine’s Day is a special someone’s birthday. (Hint: Send me cash.)

Here are the Five Things for Tuesday, February 14, 2012: “Love is in the air.” Pretty much every restaurant in town has some sort of Valentine’s Day deal going on, so I’d recommend checking out your favorite to see what they’re offering. As a reminder, you still have a couple days to vote in our poll on the best place in town for a romantic night out – As they say in Providence politics, vote early and vote often! Go and see the movie that makes a mockery of “all-star” collaborations and my birthday! Maury Loontjens Memorial Library is also getting in on the lovey-dovey act, with showings of Valentine’s Day at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The movie is rated PG-13, and frankly, has pretty dismal reviews despite the cast. But hey, sometimes you want …

5 THINGS: Keep The Abominable Snow Monster At Bay

Some of the information in this article might not be true.

Here are the Five Things for Thursday, February 9: Learn the ancient art of yoga! I believe yoga was first discovered in the Himalayans, which were named thusly because of the Mayans there. (Hence why both of those words end in-ayans.) The stretching helped the Mayans stay warm, and thus they avoided the Yeti and the Abominable Snow Monster of the North. Don’t believe me? Well, I guess you’ll just have to go to the free class at 6 p.m. today at Maury Loontjens Memorial Library to get information to refute me. I’m pretty sure I’ve got it down pat though. TODAY, TODAY! There is a performance of Annie Jr. at the high school today – not tomorrow, tomorrow. For more information, check out our story here. Sporting results are indeed sporting. …
