23 Kingston Students on URI’s Dean List

Whoops – we forgot to include these people the other day!

So the other day, I ran a list of local Dean’s List honorees at the University of Rhode Island. The problem was, I forgot 23 people from West Kingston and Kingston! In true Rhode Island fashion, I only looked up the honorees from the South Kingstown, Narragansett and Saunderstown zip codes. And of course, West Kingston and Kingston has its own postal district. Pier School Advances to Boys’ Hoops Semifinals

Thanks to a win on Tuesday over Barrington, the Mariners are now in the boys’ basketball tournament semifinals.

A 45-38 win against the No. 3E seed Barrington on Tuesday has propelled the Pier School Mariners to the middle school boys’ basketball state tournament semifinals for the second time in three years. The Mariners are scheduled to play No. 1E Portsmouth at Portsmouth Middle School on Friday. However, thanks to the impending blizzard, there is a high probability this game will be shifted to Monday, Feb. 11 or later. The state title game is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Bay View Academy. Portsmouth will be a formidable foe for the Mariners – In addition to having home court advantage, the Patriots also beat No. 2S Curtis Corner Middle School 72-50 in the tournament quarterfinals. Curtis Corner, Pier School Look for Hoop Success

Both the Pier School and Curtis Corner Middle School have games today in the boys’ basketball state tournament.

The Narragansett Pier School looks to defend its home court today, while Curtis Corner Middle School will have to win on the road, in their respective middle school boys’ basketball tournament playoff games. The Mariners are the No. 1 seed from the Southern Division, and received a preliminary round bye as a result. Although both the Mariners and Curtis Corner finished 11-1, with the lone loss coming against each other, the Pier School led the Southern Division in points scored and points against. After the preliminary round bye, the Pier School beat No. 4E Kickemuit (Bristol-Warren) 69-29 in the opening round. Today, the Mariners host No. 3E Barrington at , as the Eagles upset No. 2N North Cumberland 65-45 to earn the game. As the No. 2S …

255 Local Students On URI Dean’s List

Congratulations and salutations are in order for 255 local residents, as the University of Rhode Island has released its dean’s list recipients for the Fall 2012 semester. To qualify, full-time students must maintain a 3.3 quality point average for 12 credits. Part-time students can also earn the distinction for a 3.3 average over multiple semesters once they surpass that 12 credit threshold. A note about some of the names on these lists – Locations are provided by students in most cases, so some out-of-state graduates who now live in Narragansett, South Kingstown or Saunderstown are included in those towns’ results. Gusting Winds Lead to Delays, Ferry Cancellations

Service for the Block Island Ferry is suspended for Thursday, and local schools are delayed an hour, thanks to 65 mile per hour wind gusts.

Thanks to wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour this morning, according to the National Weather Service, school districts in South County have delayed their start by one hour. The high wind warning is in effect until 10 a.m. The NWS estimates constant wind speeds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 65, for all of Rhode Island and most of southern Massachusetts. As a result, Narragansett, South Kingstown, Chariho and Westerly have all delayed the start of classes today by one hour as of 7 a.m. To keep up with updates on these and other delays, check out the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association site here. After several months of relative calm, it finally looks a bit like Christmas, only about a month after the fact. Winter storm Jove brought about three to five inches of snow to the region, according to the National Weather Service. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday as a result. As of about midnight Monday, local schools have not instituted a delay or cancellation of any sort – Narragansett, South Kingstown, Chariho, Westerly and North Kingstown are still on schedule.
