SK, Gansett To Participate In Reading "Is Your Hair Made of Donuts"

Several local elementary schools will take part in a state-wide reading day.

Narragansett Elementary School and Peace Dale Elementary School students will read “Is Your Hair Made Of Donuts?” March 11 and 12 as Rhode Island elementary schools join a statewide reading of the book. The story is written by East Greenwich resident Joy Feldman, a North Kingstown-based nutritionist, mother of two and award-winning author, who designed it to inspire children to make healthy food choices. During National Nutrition Month, Feldman will celebrate the nationwide release of the children’s picture book that explains why the phrase “you are what you eat” may be truer than children think. That celebration will involve more than 75,000 students at more than 200 schools, libraries, youth programs, and health centers throughout RI …

Dean's Lists

23 Kingston Students on URI’s Dean List

Whoops – we forgot to include these people the other day!

So the other day, I ran a list of local Dean’s List honorees at the University of Rhode Island. The problem was, I forgot 23 people from West Kingston and Kingston! In true Rhode Island fashion, I only looked up the honorees from the South Kingstown, Narragansett and Saunderstown zip codes. And of course, West Kingston and Kingston has its own postal district. Without further adieu, here are 23 more honorees! Want to be e-mailed when we publish new Dean’s List recipients? Click the “keep me posted!” button below.

255 Local Students On URI Dean’s List

If you see these fine folks, buy them a coffee, to further their long nights of studying and midnight oil burning.

Congratulations and salutations are in order for 255 local residents, as the University of Rhode Island has released its dean’s list recipients for the Fall 2012 semester. To qualify, full-time students must maintain a 3.3 quality point average for 12 credits. Part-time students can also earn the distinction for a 3.3 average over multiple semesters once they surpass that 12 credit threshold. A note about some of the names on these lists – Locations are provided by students in most cases, so some out-of-state graduates who now live in Narragansett, South Kingstown or Saunderstown are included in those towns’ results. Without further adieu, here are the 134 South Kingstown residents, in alphabetical order by last name: And here are the 87 …

Winterguard Season Starts for Gansett Guard

The start of 2013 brings with it the start of the Winterguard season, the newest performance team for the Gansett school system.

The start of a new year brings a new season for Winterguard – It’s not called Winterguard because we start in April!  What is Winterguard, you ask? Winterguard is so many things, and at the same time, it is not like anything you have seen before.  Picture dancers and rhythmic gymnasts combined with cheerleading, a drill team and those pretty girls with the flags you see marching in the parade all wrapped up together!  A team will compete to a pre-selected music piece and perform a high intense routine.  Girls and boys are leaping about like gazelles on the Serengeti, then tumbling and spinning their bodies about, and that’s just most intros!  If you want to be on a Winterguard team, you must learn how to use “weapons.” No, don’t worry, …

The Narragansett Pier Middle School offers a cutting-edge enrichment program to students, headed by teacher Vanessa Miller.

The Narragansett Pier Middle School offers students a well-rounded curriculum of English-Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies as well as a broad range of Specials such as art, foreign language, music and much more.  In addition, NPS also provides a cutting edge program to their students — Enrichment.   Vanessa Miller became the NPS Enrichment teacher in September 2009 and in this short period of time, she has already seen exciting growth and development within the program.   Miller explains that the philosophy of the enrichment program at NPS is based in the Renzulli Schoolwide Enrichment Program (SEM). Poor Second Quarter Sinks Mariners; Rebels In Title Game Tonight

BOYS LAX – The Mariners play hard until the final whistle, but can’t overcome a poor second quarter, and the Rebels get their own chance at the title tonight.

PROVIDENCE – The Narragansett High School boys’ lacrosse team couldn’t overcome a five-goal deficit they dug for themselves in the second quarter, and fell 12-6 in the Division III title game to Smithfield. A Smithfield play with one second left resulted in a goal for senior captain Ryan Benoit, and capped off a five-goal run in the final 6:34 for the No. 1 seed. Benoit finished with three goals and was named MVP. Narragansett never recovered – The Mariners closed within three goals with 6:25 remaining in the game, but Smithfield scored 17 seconds later, and twice more in the final four minutes. Narragansett head coach Mark Chafee said his team looked a little ruffled out there, especially in the second quarter. “I was a little surprised …
