The Mariners look for a second straight Division II girls’ basketball title, while Prout will try for two in three years. Also, several area private school students can win girls’ basketball titles today with Prout and La Salle.
Something will give in the Division II girls’ basketball final today, as the high-powered Narragansett Mariners’ offense clashes with the tough man-to-man defense of the Prout Crusaders. Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m. at the Ryan Center, on the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus. We will be hosting a live chat for the game. No. 2 Narragansett (18-4, 14-2 Division II-South) has had a relatively easy path to the finals, at least compared to the other top seeds in the tournament that were felled in the quarter and semifinals by Prout. PROVIDENCE – Another game, and another strong run by Narragansett in the second half, led to a second-straight Division II title game berth for the Mariners. Narragansett uses a 25-0 run over the end of the first and the start of the second to beat the Avengers 54-48.
PROVIDENCE – With a decisive 10-minute, 25-0 run, Narragansett took a lead in the second half it wouldn’t surrender against East Greenwich en route to a 54-48 win Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Division II girls’ playoffs. Senior Maggie Salomone led the Mariners with 23 points, including a pair of 3s and two free throws during Narragansett’s run. Salomone chipped in three steals as well. Her play at the end of the first half helped start the Mariners run, which stretched from two minutes remaining in the first half to 8:26 remaining in the second half. The Crusaders advance to the quarterfinals, thanks to 16 from Maddie Hagerty and 14 from Olivia Hirst.
WAKEFIELD – Senior Maddie Hagerty and junior Olivia Hirst combined for 30 points Wednesday night as the No. 8 Prout Crusaders hit a slew of open shots in a 58-45 win against No. 9 West Warwick in a preliminary round game of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II girls’ basketball playoffs. Hagerty finished with 16 points, using a variety of head fakes, spins and drives to get free in the paint. The senior co-captain also had a block and a steal. Prout head coach Phil Quinn said Hagerty was a game-time decision following an injury suffered in the regular season finale. “I knew she would play, but I didn’t know how long she could play,” he said, likening her to an NBA player. South Kingstown pulls off a minor upset of Portsmouth, and the basketball playoffs start for Prout on Wednesday and Thursday.
Thanks to 17 points from Mary Eden, per The Providence Journal, the South Kingstown girls’ basketball team will play on in the Division I playoffs. Eden had three 3s, as No. 9 South Kingstown beat No. 8 Portsmouth 45-36. Maggie Buell had seven points, and Michaela Lawler and Stephanie Laraway each had six points. South Kingstown gets the privilege of playing No. 1 seed La Salle 6:30 p.m. Friday at Rhode Island College. (Note: This game time was shifted from an earlier article.) If the Rebels win in the quarterfinals, they play 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at Rhode Island College. After some initial jitters, the Mariners press their way past the Huskies in D-II playoff action, 55-44.
NARRAGANSETT – Overcoming a slow start in their playoff opener, the No. 2 seeded Narragansett High School girls’ basketball team used a commanding performance from senior point guard Maggie Salomone to eliminate No. 15 Mt. Hope 55-44. Salomone shook off some haphazard play of her own in the game’s initial eight minutes as well. On a drive to the hoop with 8:31 left in the first half, she was knocked to the ground while going up for a shot. However, there wasn’t a foul call, and in frustration, Salomone swore while on the ground. She was immediately given a technical foul. The Rhode Island Interscholastic League has released brackets for the Division I, Division II and Division III girls’ basketball playoffs, and both Narragansett and South Kingstown are in action tonight. Division I South Kingstown (7-11 Division I) is seeded No. 9, and as a result, travels to No. 8 Portsmouth (8-10 Division I) for a preliminary round game at 7 p.m. The two teams have vastly different styles. While the Rebels prefer to go inside as often as possible, the Patriots regularly take 20 shots a game from 3-point range. Despite the different styles though, both teams lacked the offensive consistency of the better Division I teams in the regular season. With the basketball seasons winding down, several local teams are jockeying for position.
As usual, playoff seeding for the Division II girls’ basketball could come down to a grudge match between Narragansett and East Greenwich. The game starts at 7 p.m. at East Greenwich High School. The Mariners are 13-2 in Division II play, and the Avengers, at 12-3, need a win to force a tiebreaker for the regular season division crown. According to The Providence Journal, on Tuesday the Mariners beat West Warwick 51-37. However, the Avengers beat Prout (9-6 Division II) the same night on layup by Keri Pallister for a 46-45 win. Narragansett won the Division II title in 2011-12, although with a much different roster.
