Middletown is bound for the Division III Super Bowl after a commanding 35-14 win against Narragansett in the semifinals.

MIDDLETOWN – On their opening possession, the Middletown Islanders looked like they had stalled out against the Narragansett Mariners. The Islanders faced a 4th-and-18 from 35 yards out, and Narragansett had seemingly righted the ship after giving up long gains on the ground to Connor Russ and Randolph Butler. However, on the play, Middletown quarterback Justin Sellar rolled out on a waggle and found Russ in the middle of the field, after Russ was left wide open. It gave the Islanders a 7-0 lead, one they wouldn’t lose, and it was the first of five unanswered touchdowns for Middletown. Narragansett would only score two touchdowns after Middletown pulled its defensive starters, for a 35-14 final. Middletown will play No. 2 seed East …

Football Playoff Game Postponed to Wednesday

Tuesday’s game between Middletown and Narragansett will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Because of inclement weather, all Rhode Island high school football games have been postponed from Tuesday night to Wednesday. Locally, this means that No. 4 Narragansett travels to Gaudet Middle School in Middletown to play the No. 1 Islanders in the semifinals of the Division III playoffs on Wednesday. The game still starts at 7 p.m. Since I’m typing this right now from a coffee shop in Cranston, I can attest that there is white, slick stuff dropping from the sky and on to the ground, and then, sticking on said ground. [VIDEO] Avengers Control 1st Half, Mariners

Narragansett can’t dig itself out from an 18-0 deficit at the half and falls 24-14 to the East Greenwich Avengers.

NARRAGANSETT – East Greenwich’s Andrew Miner had three touchdown passes and was named offensive MVP in a 24-14 win for the Avengers on Thanksgiving Day at Narragansett High School. The Avengers (9-1, 7-1 Division III) took a 18-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Although the Mariners (5-5, 4-4 Division III) made a run in the second half, they never came within a possession of East Greenwich. Junior Carney Crawford scored the first touchdown for the Avengers, getting six yards on a pitch with 4:41 left in the first quarter. The teams then traded stalled drives and turnovers, until the final four minutes of the second quarter. I am not a football mom, I band mom and a guard mom, so I'm not at the games for the football but I have to say I feel Gansett did a great job playing against EG. I am also proud of the Gansett parents I saw shaking the hands of EG parents and saying "Congrats". Turkey Day Preview: Gansett vs. EG, NK vs. SK

The Rebels will be favored for the first time in a while in a football game, and the Mariners have a possible playoff preview with East Greenwich.

Thanksgiving means many things to many different people, and for a large portion of the community, it’ll be a day dominated by football. The Narragansett Mariners will host the East Greenwich Avengers, while the South Kingstown Rebels travel to North Kingstown to face the Skippers. It’s the traditional rivalry game for both teams. RIHS Football Poll – Thanksgiving Edition

RIHS Football Poll – Johnston tumbles down the polls after being upset in the Division II playoffs.

After being upset by Central in the opening round of the Division II playoffs, the Johnston Panthers have dropped from No. 5 to No. 11 in the Rhode Island Sports Media High School Football Poll. No. 10 West Warwick and No. 13 Central took advantage of the loss, moving up four and five sports, respectively. The highest ranked Division II team is now Cumberland, at No. 5. La Salle remains in the top spot of the poll, collecting all 14 first place votes, followed by fellow Division I playoff teams Hendricken, Portsmouth and Cranston East. Portsmouth and East flip-flopped in the polls after the Thunderbolts barely beat South Kingstown 23-17. Thanksgiving games for most teams take place either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. HS PLAYOFFS: Rebels, Mariners Advance in Postseason

South Kingstown upsets La Salle in the Division I girls’ soccer playoffs and will play for a state title on Monday.

Thanks to penalty kicks, the South Kingstown High School girls’ soccer team will play for a state championship noon Monday at Rhode Island College against Smithfield. After falling behind 1-0, the Rebels tied the game up by the half. The score remained at 1-1 through the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods. According to The Providence Journal, the Rebels broke the tie by winning a best-of-five shootout 3-2. Scoring for South Kingstown were Emily McClarnon, Brooke Livingston and Samantha Ledonne. HS PLAYOFFS: Mariners, Rebels Vie for Titles

Narragansett plays for a division title today, and the Rebels are a game away from a state title.

The Narragansett boys’ soccer team goes for the second Division II title in school history at 2 p.m. at Rhode Island College today against the Classical Purple. The Mariners (12-2-5, 10-1-4 Division II), seeded No. 2, got to the title game with a 2-0 victory Tuesday over No. 3 Lincoln in the semifinals. Narragansett had a bye in the initial round of the playoffs, and beat No. 7 Mount St. Charles 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Classical (17-1-1, 13-1-1 Division II) is the bracket’s top seed, and the top team in Division II. The Purple beat No. 8 Smithfield, the defending Division II champs, 1-0 in the quarterfinals, and No. 4 Westerly 3-0 in the semifinals. Narragansett lost 4-0 at Classical on Oct. 9. RIHS Football Poll – Week 9

La Salle remains in the top spot, and they remain undefeated.

Back after a week’s absence – thanks Sandy! – not much has changed in the top six. Although the order has switched around a bit, La Salle, Hendricken, Cranston East and Portsmouth remain the top four in the state. La Salle remains undefeated, while the other three have traded wins and losses against one another. Behind the top four in Division I lurk the best two teams – so far – in Division II, Johnston and Cumberland. After the top six is where the ballot gets jumbled, with a mixture of mediocre Division I programs, good Division II programs and great Division III programs. RIHS Football Poll – Week 7

La Salle takes all 14 first place votes in the latest Rhode Island Sports Media Football Poll, after Hendricken is beaten by Portsmouth.

All 14 first place votes went to No. 1 La Salle this week, after No. 3 Hendricken took its first loss of the season, 39-13, to No. 2 Portsmouth. The win puts the Patriots in good position for a home game in the Division I playoffs, as long as they can win Friday against No. 4 Cranston East. The Thunderbolts can muddy the picture further with a win of their own though. The big movers in this week’s poll were No. 13 West Warwick, No. 18 Westerly and No. 19 East Providence, although for the wrong reasons. All three teams fell at least five spots after losses.
