Boys' Soccer Plays Spoiler on Senior Day [Video]

The Mariners upset the Islanders' chance for a division title with a 1-1 tie on Friday afternoon.

Capitalizing on a Middletown error and some unfortunate luck in the final two minutes, the Narragansett Mariners earned a 1-1 tie on Friday afternoon and spoiled the Islanders' chances for a share of the division title. Coming into the game, Middletown (11-4-1 Division II-South) needed a win to force a three-way tie for the division lead, which seemed likely against a Narragansett (5-8-3 Division II-South) squad already eliminated from playoff contention. The previous match between the two on Sept. 30 resulted in a 2-0 Islanders win. However, the Mariners knotted the game at 1-1 in the 50th minute. Junior Andrew Morvan put pressure on the goalkeeper with a run, which caused him to fumble the ball. When the ball hit the ground, Morvan …

Boys Soccer: Crusaders Overwhelm Mariners 3-1

Thanks to a second half surge, the Crusaders deal a serious blow the Mariners’ playoff hopes.

NARRAGANSETT – After a surprising first half that saw the Mariners take a 1-0 lead, the Prout Crusaders roared back, scoring three goals at point blank range and winning 3-1 Friday afternoon. Narragansett (4-8-2, 4-8-2 Division II-South) took an early lead on a run by senior Aaron Libman. Beating a defender down the left sideline, the goalie came out to defend him. He slipped a shot on the ground to the right, past the diving goal, to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. They held the lead for the rest of the half, despite a ferocious Prout (10-3-1, 10-3-1 Division II-South) attack, thanks to some outstanding work in goal by junior Zachary McKanna. He finished with 15 saves, seven in the first half. However, Prout head coach Timothy Ryan said his…

Sports Roundup: Boys’ Soccer Falls to EG; Football Tonight

The boys’ soccer team gives up the determining goal in the first half against East Greenwich, and the football team gears up for their first division game of the year tonight.

East Greenwich would score the only goal of the game in a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Narragansett Friday afternoon in boys’ soccer action. The Avengers (4-0, 4-0 Division II-South) scored in the 33rd minute. Off of a corner kick, freshman Gregory Kehoe put a ball toward net that senior Derek Ferra was able to tap in. “It was a good ball by Kehoe,” Ferra said, adding that it led to an easy tap-in for him. “I didn’t know if he meant to cross it or shoot it.” Narragansett head coach Ryan Kanaczet said that although his team lost, he was happy with their this early in the season, against another Division II team he expects to see near the top of the standings. “It wasn’t a bad loss, East Greenwich is number one in our division,” he said…
