Get all the information you need to know from Five Things, our daily look at the rest of the day, which again, comes daily.
Here are the Five Things for Wednesday, February 15, 2012: Wear pink! Tonight is the annual Pink Out at the Ryan Center, as the Rams (5-21, 2-9 Atlantic 10) host the St. Joseph’s Hawks (16-10, 6-5 Atlantic 10). All proceeds from the sale of $7 pink t-shirts will go to Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resources. URI will attempt to put two ugly losses, to Xavier and Charlotte, in the rear view mirror with a win against the Hawks. For more info, or to buy tickets ahead of time, click here. Here is the traditional sports roundup of yesterday’s results and tonight’s upcoming games. Uh, just like the preceding sentence said, here is that rundown: Sign up for FREE Everbridge alert notifications! In case you are unawares – and many of you are – the …

More important than Valentine’s Day is a special someone’s birthday. (Hint: Send me cash.)
Here are the Five Things for Tuesday, February 14, 2012: “Love is in the air.” Pretty much every restaurant in town has some sort of Valentine’s Day deal going on, so I’d recommend checking out your favorite to see what they’re offering. As a reminder, you still have a couple days to vote in our poll on the best place in town for a romantic night out – As they say in Providence politics, vote early and vote often! Go and see the movie that makes a mockery of “all-star” collaborations and my birthday! Maury Loontjens Memorial Library is also getting in on the lovey-dovey act, with showings of Valentine’s Day at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The movie is rated PG-13, and frankly, has pretty dismal reviews despite the cast. But hey, sometimes you want …

One band or one movie makes me think of more movies and more bands. Isn’t life funny like that?
Here are the Five Things for Wednesday, February 8, 2012: “Darling don’t you go and cut your hair.” Unfortunately, there is not a Pavement appreciation club meeting at town hall tonight. This meeting is at 6 p.m. and instead is about paving roads… That’s all I’ve got to say about that, since it seems pretty self-explanatory. “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Likewise, “Networking at Noon” is not about Network. (Doing Five Things every day makes me worry that we’re running perilously low on movie and band titles.) Deb Kelso of the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a networking event at noon at the Mews Tavern in Wakefield. The cost is $12, and while RSVPing is recommended, drop-ins are normally OK. “…

A good movie playing at Maury Loontjens reminds me of some other good movies, plus, uh, 1980s wrestlers the Road Warriors.
Sorry that there wasn't a Five Things for Monday – For some reason, I found myself deep in a dark darkness over some thing that happened Sunday night, but which I no longer remember, for unknown reasons. Accept my apologies, and here are the Five Things for Tuesday, February 7, 2012: There is more than a 50/50 chance of this movie being excellent. At least according to IMDB, 50/50 is actually approved by 80 percent of those who see it. If you're unfamiliar with the basic plot, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Third Rock From The Sun) has cancer, and Seth Rogen (every Judd Apatow movie ever) does his best to be his friend during the whole process. At Maury Loontjens Memorial Library, they will have showings at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. WARNING: This movie is …

Lots of tasty things are going on this weekend. (The Crash Test Dummies would be envious of this article.)
Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 3, 2012, and the weekend: Mmm, pasta! I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but running a hockey program sure is expensive. You essentially have to book ice time at rinks across the state, never mind all of the various equipment you need to buy. So, if you’re looking to pitch in, and want to fill up your stomach in the process, check out the hockey team’s pasta dinner tonight at the Narragansett Community Center. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the cost is $10. There are a variety of raffles being held as well, with the top prize $200 cash. Mmm, Narragansett sports! The girls’ basketball team (12-3, 10-1 Division II-South) will look to rebound (ha ha, get it?) from their first Division II loss of…

We've been busy researching these Five Things.
Here are the Five Things for Thursday, February 2, 2012: It’s storytime AGAIN! Just like yesterday, those fine folks at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library offer a story time for the younger folks. Today’s recommended ages are 2 and 3. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs until 11:15 a.m., but if you’re a first-timer, registration is required. Mini sports round-up right here. Sharing some of the results of the past week… There are games today as well! Today, wrestling is the only home team, hosting Mount Pleasant at 7 p.m. Boys’ basketball plays at Rogers (14-3, 11-1 Division II-East). At 5:30 p.m., the girls’ ice hockey team (5-7-1, 5-7 DeCosta Division) plays the Cranston co-op (4-5-1, 4-5-1 DeCosta Division) at the Levy Rink. And …

Gosh, there are a lot of sporting events today, plus Boston Bruins' forward Tyler Seguin turns 20. As a wise man would say, “CELEBRATION! UNITY!”
Here are the Five Things for Tuesday, January 31, 2012: Hoops, hoops, hoops! There are three Narragansett basketball games of note today: Deja vu! Remember how there was a boys' indoor track meet yesterday, but it was freshman states, so there was no guarantee any Mariners were competing? Welcome to Tuesday, where the girls' indoor track team might be competing at freshman states! The meet is up at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, so check with your favorite freshman to see whether they're competing or not. Any athlete that has qualified for the state meet is ineligible for the freshman states. “Some people go to The Prout School and would like news too, you know.” I know that lately, unfortunately, we've been slacking with our…

Narragansett prevails in overtime thanks to clutch shots from Brendan Byrne and Dan Doyle, the little brother of tournament organizer Pat Doyle.
NARRAGANSETT – It was a family affair Sunday afternoon, as Dan Doyle and Brendan Byrne matched the clutch play of the Patriots with some of their own at Narragansett High School. Byrne hit two free throws at the end of regulation to tie the score at 35, and Doyle had a team-high 15 to lead the Mariners past Division I North Kingstown, 42-39, in overtime in a four-team junior varsity tournament. Byrne struggled through much of the game, as he was held scoreless in the first half and most of the second. However, he was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line and also had a key baseline drive for a layup in the overtime. The Mariners also got key contributions on the defensive end from freshmen Joseph Sekator and Tyrell Smith. Both had multiple …

In action Thursday and Friday, both the boys’ and the girls’ basketball teams protect home court.
NARRAGANSETT – Thanks to an impressive defensive effort in the final eight minutes, the Narragansett boys’ basketball team turned a tight game into an easy victory, 55-41, against the Tolman Tigers on Thursday night. It was a much-needed win for the Mariners (6-7, 4-5 Division II-South) against Tolman (6-5, 4-5 Division II-Central), as they look to improve their seed for the state tournament from its current rank in the 20s. “It was a big win,” Narragansett head coach David Gee said. “We needed to beat a good team.” It was the Mariners’ first win in league play against a team with a .500 record. Narragansett has taken care of business against the division’s weaker opponents, beating Scituate, Chariho and Ponaganset each by more than 20 …

Plenty of sports, plus Detlef Schrempf, this weekend!
Here are the Five Things for Friday, January 20, 2012, and extending into Saturday and Sunday: All the women, who independent, throw your hands up at me! Friday night is dominated by girls' sports, as the basketball and hockey teams are in action. The girls' basketball team (10-2, 8-0 Division II-South) looks to stay undefeated in Division II play against Mt. Hope (6-5, 5-3 Division II-South). Tip-off is at 7 p.m., with junior varsity at 5:15 p.m. The Narragansett, South Kingstown and North Kingstown girls' hockey co-op (2-6-1, 2-6 DeCosta Division) takes on the Cranston co-op (2-5-1, 2-5-1 DeCosta) at 8 p.m. The face-off is at the West Warwick Civic Center, making it a sort-of neutral ice game for the two teams. Where my dogs at? Since …
