SPORTS: Prout Falters, Gansett vs. EG for Seeding

With the basketball seasons winding down, several local teams are jockeying for position.

As usual, playoff seeding for the Division II girls’ basketball could come down to a grudge match between Narragansett and East Greenwich. The game starts at 7 p.m. at East Greenwich High School. The Mariners are 13-2 in Division II play, and the Avengers, at 12-3, need a win to force a tiebreaker for the regular season division crown. According to The Providence Journal, on Tuesday the Mariners beat West Warwick 51-37. However, the Avengers beat Prout (9-6 Division II) the same night on layup by Keri Pallister for a 46-45 win. Pier School Advances to Boys’ Hoops Semifinals

Thanks to a win on Tuesday over Barrington, the Mariners are now in the boys’ basketball tournament semifinals.

A 45-38 win against the No. 3E seed Barrington on Tuesday has propelled the Pier School Mariners to the middle school boys’ basketball state tournament semifinals for the second time in three years. The Mariners are scheduled to play No. 1E Portsmouth at Portsmouth Middle School on Friday. However, thanks to the impending blizzard, there is a high probability this game will be shifted to Monday, Feb. 11 or later. The state title game is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Bay View Academy. Portsmouth will be a formidable foe for the Mariners – In addition to having home court advantage, the Patriots also beat No. 2S Curtis Corner Middle School 72-50 in the tournament quarterfinals. Curtis Corner, Pier School Look for Hoop Success

Both the Pier School and Curtis Corner Middle School have games today in the boys’ basketball state tournament.

The Narragansett Pier School looks to defend its home court today, while Curtis Corner Middle School will have to win on the road, in their respective middle school boys’ basketball tournament playoff games. The Mariners are the No. 1 seed from the Southern Division, and received a preliminary round bye as a result. Although both the Mariners and Curtis Corner finished 11-1, with the lone loss coming against each other, the Pier School led the Southern Division in points scored and points against. After the preliminary round bye, the Pier School beat No. 4E Kickemuit (Bristol-Warren) 69-29 in the opening round. Banner Raising for Pier Teams Wednesday

The Pier School will honor its track and cross country teams at halftime of the boys’ basketball game Wednesday.

Release courtesy of the Rinaldis and the Pier School listserv. A banner-raising has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 23 during halftime of the boys’ basketball game. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the banners will be raised at about 4 p.m. We hope to see student athletes, family and friends to recognize the boys’ state championship for track and field and a Southern Division championship for cross country. ***** By the way, that Pier School boys’ basketball team is currently undefeated, with a 15-0 overall record and a 8-0 mark in Southern Division play. They will be hosting Chariho (3-7, 3-7 Southern Division).

Griffith Speaks Today for Senior Project

The varsity football and basketball player will be speaking at 10:15 a.m. at New Life Assembly.

Narragansett High School senior Mark Griffith will be giving a speech on “coaching for victory and sharing wisdom” today as part of his senior project. The speech is at 10:15 a.m. at 251 Post Road, which is the New Life Assembly Church according to a listing on South Kingstown Patch. The church is on the corner of Post and Tuckertown roads. Families are welcome to attend. Griffith spent the past year as a starter on the playoff-qualifying Narragansett High School football and boys’ basketball teams. Cox Sports to Air High School Hoops Selection Show Tonight

Seedings for the state playoffs will be announced live at 9 p.m.

At 9 p.m. tonight, Cox Sports will air the Varsity Life Selection Show for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League’s 2012 basketball playoffs on Channel 3. Girls and boys teams from the state who have already qualified for the postseason will find out who they’re playing, as seedings are announced live during the show. For the second straight year, boys’ teams from all divisions will compete against each other in the playoffs to determine a champion. The show will include bracket analysis from NBC 10’s Frank Carpano and John Gilooly of The Providence Journal. Mike Lunney and Tom Mezzanotte will represent the RIIL and discuss the tournament formula. The selection show will also include interviews with several coaches of playoff-bound teams…

Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 17, 2012, along with some weekend events: A second chance at a polar plunge (and a buffet-style dinner from George’s). The second annual Plunge for Preemies is taking place 3 p.m. Saturday at George’s of Galilee. If you raise at least $50 and pre-register, you get a t-shirt and a free dinner ticket.
