24 Cabanas Expected To Be Unavailable

According to town officials, 24 cabanas are likely to be unavailable for the 2013 summer season.

NARRAGANSETT – Although repairs related to Hurricane Sandy are still ongoing, town officials estimate that about two dozen cabanas will be unavailable to start the beach season, and alternate plans have been made. In a 4-0 vote Monday night, the town council approved a plan from the Parks and Recreation Department to offer an alternate option for the displaced cabana owners. The owners of lower cabana units from 31A to 42B would be allowed to “renew” their plan at the cost of $500 this year, down from $1,750. However, the cabanas are not expected to be ready. Instead, the owners would essentially retain their benefits, sans the cabana – six vehicles on an access list, six beach passes and two transferable parking passes. One numbered …

Like Photographing the Ocean Tide? There's a Contest for That!

Grab your camera and head to the shoreline June 2 and 3 to photograph some of the highest tides of the year.

A local partnership needs your help photographing the highest tides of the year in Rhode Island.  Rhode Island Sea Grant is partnering with the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council and Save The Bay to record ongoing flooding from high tide events. They are especially interested in photos capturing the effect of flooding on shoreline homes, business, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. These areas are increasingly vulnerable to flooding during extreme high tide events, and as sea levels rise due to climate change, extreme tides may become the norm within a few decades. Photos submitted to Rhode Island Sea Grant will have the chance to be published in the magazine 41°N. The photographer who captures the best photo will …

Well said Floyd, If you look at the course map the race seems to stay mostly in the bay and never gets very close the beach at all. Saying that it is "off the coast of Narragansett Town Beach." is technically true I guess. For that matter Europe is also off the coast of the town beach. http://www.americascup.com/en/Events/2011-2012-world-series/Newport-USA/Course-Map/   more ›

Photos From Canonchet Habitat Restoration Project

Miss out on the first sessions? You have another chance to volunteer on May 11 and May 12.

The Friends of Canonchet Farm, with the support of the Town of Narragansett and the approval of the Rhode Island Coastal Resource Management Council (CRMC), has developed a plan and begun work to remove invasive plants from the east side of Lake Canonchet across the street from the Narragansett Town Beach. This is a three-year plan with the mechanical removal of invasive plants such as black swallow-wort, Japanese knotweed, Oriental bittersweet, European honeysuckle and phragmites, and the eventual replacement with native plants. This work is a necessary first step in the development of the linear park along Boston Neck Road and Narragansett Avenue, as described in the Canonchet Farm Master Plan outline adopted by the Narragansett Town …

Group Wants To Wave Goodbye to Breast Cancer

An event will be held at Narragansett Town Beach to raise awareness for the Rhode Island Breast Cancer Coalition's goal.

The Rhode Island Breast Cancer Coalition wants you to join it in helping to “wave” goodbye to breast cancer. On Sunday, April 22, the group will be hosting a wave mob at Narragansett Town Beach at noon. There will be an aerial photograph taken, with the goal of spelling out “2020” from the air with blue shirts. It is part of the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s deadline for curing breast cancer. Ideally, the coalition wants to see all breast cancer eradicated by 2020, and hopes that setting a firm deadline makes it happen. For more information, visit the Rhode Island Breast Cancer Coalition website here.
