Best Liquor Store – Sweeney’s Wine and Spirits

Sweeney’s Wine and Spirits is your choice for best liquor store in South Kingstown and Narragansett.

In one of our closest Readers’ Choice votes, Sweeney’s narrowly edges out Pier Liquors, O’Neil’s, Schwabby’s and Wakefield Liquors. Sweeney’s captured 28 percent of the vote, which was spread amongst eight choices this week. Pier Liquors was in second with 20 percent of the vote. We’re taking next week off for Readers’ Choice, in honor of, um… Chilean Navy Day, of course. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Readers’ Choice: Best Liquor Store

Vote on which local liquor store is your go-to for all your beer, wine and/or liquor needs.

You might not know it from the March-like weather Rhode Island experienced last week, but the unofficial start of summer — Memorial Day — is only a couple weeks away. That means it's time to break out the BBQ pit, stock the freezer with grillable meats and — of course — fill the fridge with your favorite adult beverages. Maybe you want to cool down with an ice-cold beer, relax on the deck with a refreshing vodka-tonic, or fill your glass with your favorite red or white wine. Whatever you crave, there is no shortage of package stores in the area to supply you with your favorite spirit. Just about any liquor store will carry plenty of Jack Daniels, Absolut, Sam Adams and a typical assortment of table wines. But any true connoisseur knows it'…

Pier Liquors....largest micro-brew selection, coldest beer and wines in town. vast selection of eclectic and everyday wines from all over the country. Lots of "2 for" deals, Monday wine discounts, Thursday beer and liquor discounts...great pricing, not what you expect for a store a stones throw from the beach. The staff there are all so friendly and knowledgable. Run by the owner's daughter, this…   more ›

Best Stay-cation Spot: Narragansett Town Beach

Narragansett Town Beach is this week’s Readers’ Choice honoree, after beating out more than a dozen other options.

With about a third of all the votes cast, Narragansett Town Beach has beat out 13 other options to be this week’s Readers’ Choice winner for Best Stay-cation Spot. When people close their eyes and daydream of the stereotypical beach experience, Narragansett Town Beach is often a good approximation of this. It features shimmering and soft sand, the Towers in the distance and a little more than a mile of walk-able coastline. The surrounding area also offers plenty of options, ranging from the shops in the Pier Marketplace to the history of the South County Museum and Canonchet Farm to the simple joy of walking along the seawall. Want to make a formal vacation of it? There are small B&Bs dotting the coast, and the Village Inn. Next week, our …

Best Flowers – Belmont Market

The marketplace earns the most votes and comments, earning it the Readers’ Choice distinction.

With 143 votes and a slew of comments, Belmont Market is the winner of this week’s Readers’ Choice for best flowers. Belmont’s edges out the Kenyon Avenue Floral Company, which had almost as many poll votes – 101 – but not as many comments in support. The marketplace is centrally located, on Kingstown Road at the Dale Carlia Shopping Center in South Kingstown. In addition to flowers, Belmont’s has a healthy selection of organic goods, since it is, you know, a marketplace. Later today, we’ll have a preview article up for next week’s Readers’ Choice – Best Spot for Mother’s Day Brunch. We’ll be taking nominations, so if you have a favorite spot for that you definitely want included, send it to Stephen.greenwell@patch.com. Want to be e-mailed…

Readers' Choice: Best Florist

Who's your favorite in town?

If a woman in your life says "don't bother buying me flowers," you're probably better off doing it anyway. Why? Because no matter how traditional of a gift they are, flowers are an immediate pick-me-up. They're fresh, colorful and quite the pleasant surprise. That said, you can't give just any flowers. (Forgo the carnations and don't even think about picking a few out of the front lawn.) Make it a bouquet, the bigger the better. Roses always win. Luckily, there are dedicated local florists who can help you get it right. This week, we want to know: Which florist in town is your favorite? Vote in our poll below, then share your thoughts in the comments section. If we left your favorite florist off the list, note that in the comments as well…

Readers' Choice: Best Sandwich

What's your favorite place to grab a sandwich in Narragansett or South Kingstown? Nominate and/or vote!

A sandwich is a quick-and-easy meal, and on most menus, it's the most reliable pick when you're not sure about the other food. It's also usually the cheapest thing you can order. But as easy as it is to make a great sandwich, only a few places offer a truly awe-inspiring sandwich. You know, the one that you can't help but order even when you know there are more sophisticated dishes on the menu. This week, we want to know: Which restaurant or deli serves up the best sandwich? Vote in our poll below, and then share your thoughts in the comments section. If we left your favorite sandwich shop off the list, note that in the comments as well. We'll leave the poll up all week then close voting at 9 a.m. Friday. At noon that day, we'll share your…

Best Place For Sporting Goods – Olympia Sports

A mainstay of the Wakefield Mall earns the Readers’ Choice distinction for this week. Coming next week: Best Sandwich!

With a good portion of the vote and a long-standing presence in the Wakefield Mall, Olympia Sports has won this week’s Readers’ Choice award for Best Place for Sporting Goods. It wasn’t a hotly contested week, since there doesn’t tend to be a ton of options in South County for sporting goods stores that stock everything. (Instead, you tend to get a lot of specialty stores for just one or two sports, I’ve noticed.) Therefore, Olympia is one of the few stores in the region that offers a little bit of everything for pretty much every sport. I know I used to go there quite a bit as a kid. Join us Monday for our next Readers’ Choice poll, which will be about… Best Sandwich! Since I figure the voting will be a bit heavier for this one, please …

Readers' Choice: Best Place For Sporting Goods

The weather is warming up - where are you going to get geared for adventure?

It's warming up out there as summer gets closer on the calendar. Maybe you're looking to replace the sneakers you cross-trained your toes right through, or you're getting ready to take on a new game. Perhaps you're planning a big camping trip or want to see the neighborhood via kayak. This week, we want to know: where do you go to get equipped for sports? Do you prefer Olympia Sports, Kenyon Sportswear Outlet or the always-fun and mysterious “other”? (And if you do fall into the “other” category, let us know so we can add that option to the poll!) Vote in our poll below, then share your thoughts in the comments section. If we left your favorite service off the list, note that in the comments as well. We'll leave the poll up all week then …

Best Tax Prep: Caliri, Mancini and Barbieri

You voted, and we weighed your comments more heavily than the low poll turnout.

The winner of this week’s Readers’ Choice is the firm of Caliri, Mancini and Barbieri. The firm got just five of the 19 votes cast in the cast – about 26 percent – but they got three of the votes in the comments, which are weighed more heavily. Stay tuned for Monday’s poll, which will be about the best place to buy sporting good equipment. If you have any tips or suggestions for that, feel free to e-mail them to Stephen.greenwell@patch.com. Hi Candy - When turnout is low with the poll, we typically consider other factors, like each listings' reviews, comments in favor of them and the votes they get. Since there were only about 19 total votes cast, I went with the place that got the most affirmative comments.   more ›

Readers' Choice: Best Place to Take Your Taxes

We need your help this week! Nominate where you actually get your taxes done.

It's April, and with this month's showers comes the annual tax filing deadline. And for Readers' Choice, we're doing things a bit differently this week. The way our directory is, with the Financial Services category, it's really hard to tell who actually prepares tax returns! So, considering this the “open nomination” week. In the comments, or via e-mail, let us know who does your taxes! I'll add them to the poll. The only place that I was certain did taxes was H&R Block, so they're the lone nominee in the poll – for now. Vote in our poll below, then share your thoughts in the comments section. If we left your favorite spot off the list, note that in the comments as well. We'll leave the poll up all week then close voting at 9 a.m. Friday…
