Mariners Overwhelm Prout in 2nd Half for D-II Title

Following a familiar script, Narragansett takes control in the second half against Prout with scorching offense, 56-43.

KINGSTON – Using drives from guard Maggie Salomone to setup center Hannah Maymon, and transition layups from Chelsea Sahagian, the Narragansett Mariners distanced themselves from Prout in the second half en route to a 56-43 Division II girls’ basketball title win against Prout at the Ryan Center on Sunday afternoon. Narragansett stretched a 28-20 halftime lead with a 21-8 run over the first eight minutes of the second half and never looked back. Playoff Hockey Doubleheader at Boss Tonight

Prout and Narragansett boys’ hockey are in action at the Boss Ice Arena on the URI Kingston campus.

Tonight at the Boss Ice Arena on the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus, Prout looks to close out its Division II series, and Narragansett looks for a win in its Division III series. No. 2 Prout took a 1-0 series lead against No. 3 North Kingstown with a 3-1 win Friday night, according to results posted on the RIIL. Game two takes place 8 p.m. tonight, with game three – if needed – on Monday. The Division II finals will start Thursday, March 14 at Brown University. The puck drops in game one at 6:15 p.m. In the Division III playoffs, results between No. 4 Narragansett and No. 1 West Warwick were not posted on the RIIL as of 9 a.m. Saturday. PROVIDENCE – Another game, and another strong run by Narragansett in the second half, led to a second-straight Division II title game berth for the Mariners. The second-seeded Mariners played even with No. 11 Coventry for about a half, but pulled away as the second half started for a 59-42 win Wednesday night in the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs at the Murray Center on the Rhode Island College campus. “The first five minutes of both halves are crucial,” Narragansett head coach Kathryn Mahoney said. “They turn on that high pressure.” Narragansett received balancing scoring from its starting five – Maggie Salomone, Abby McKanna, Chelsea Sahagian, Hannah Maymon and Ali Castrovillari. Mariners Out-Run Avengers

Narragansett uses a 25-0 run over the end of the first and the start of the second to beat the Avengers 54-48.

PROVIDENCE – With a decisive 10-minute, 25-0 run, Narragansett took a lead in the second half it wouldn’t surrender against East Greenwich en route to a 54-48 win Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Division II girls’ playoffs. Senior Maggie Salomone led the Mariners with 23 points, including a pair of 3s and two free throws during Narragansett’s run. Salomone chipped in three steals as well. Her play at the end of the first half helped start the Mariners run, which stretched from two minutes remaining in the first half to 8:26 remaining in the second half. NHS Wrestling Receives Grant

According to a press release from the Legislative Press Bureau, Narragansett wrestling will receive a $2,000 grant for new mats.

Sheehan (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown) has announced the presentation of a legislative grant to the Narragansett High School wrestling team. The grant is the result of a funding request for the program submitted by Sheehan during the previous General Assembly session. As a result, the team will receive a grant of $2,000. The money will be used for a new wrestling mat that will provide better safety for the high school’s student athletes. “While the wrestling team is funded by the Narragansett School System, we all know how tight school funding has become,” Sheehan said. “I am happy to be able to provide this grant money so that the athletes on the team can feel safe …

[VIDEO] Islanders Maroon Mariners, 35-14

Middletown is bound for the Division III Super Bowl after a commanding 35-14 win against Narragansett in the semifinals.

MIDDLETOWN – On their opening possession, the Middletown Islanders looked like they had stalled out against the Narragansett Mariners. The Islanders faced a 4th-and-18 from 35 yards out, and Narragansett had seemingly righted the ship after giving up long gains on the ground to Connor Russ and Randolph Butler. However, on the play, Middletown quarterback Justin Sellar rolled out on a waggle and found Russ in the middle of the field, after Russ was left wide open. It gave the Islanders a 7-0 lead, one they wouldn’t lose, and it was the first of five unanswered touchdowns for Middletown. Narragansett would only score two touchdowns after Middletown pulled its defensive starters, for a 35-14 final. Middletown will play No. 2 seed East …

Weather Watches and Warnings

Football Playoff Game Postponed to Wednesday

Tuesday’s game between Middletown and Narragansett will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Because of inclement weather, all Rhode Island high school football games have been postponed from Tuesday night to Wednesday. Locally, this means that No. 4 Narragansett travels to Gaudet Middle School in Middletown to play the No. 1 Islanders in the semifinals of the Division III playoffs on Wednesday. The game still starts at 7 p.m. Since I’m typing this right now from a coffee shop in Cranston, I can attest that there is white, slick stuff dropping from the sky and on to the ground, and then, sticking on said ground.
