25 Things To Do Before Back To School!

Have you checked your calendar lately? Labor Day is nearing fast, but don’t panic. Our Moms’ Council has 25 suggestions of last minute things you can do before it’s back-to-school time.

It always amazes me that summer vacation goes by as quickly as it does.  When the kids get out in mid-June, it is almost daunting thinking that we will all have 10 unscheduled weeks together until it’s time for back-to-school.  Many of us have grandiose plans of how we will soak up the glorious sun, kick back and drink ice-cold Del’s Lemonade, or finally get to visit friends, family and places that we can’t seem to fit into our winter schedules.  Newsflash:  In less than four weeks, most South County schools will be back in session, and much to many of our moms’ council members' chagrin, we still haven’t done half of what we wanted to with our kids this summer. Here is a combined list of 25 things that several of our Gansett moms hope to …

Venting To Your Girlfriends About Your Spouse

No one's perfect - and falling into that category are our true loves, our spouses. There are plenty they do that is right, BUT, there are also many things that they do that test our sanity. What's a wife to do? Tell her girlfriend!

Many times our husbands, significant others, boyfriends, or partners — how can I say this nicely — drive us nuts! (Sometimes on a daily basis.) Other times it is more serious and they do things we feel we cannot hold in, so what do we do?  We vent to our best girlfriends, that’s what!  With all the technology available to us today, we can let our BFF know in an instant that our husband forgot, again, about our wedding anniversary, or that he can’t understand why we still crave a little romance even after being married for over 10 years.   Some of our spouses are grateful we have a close kinship with our sisterhood of women — it lets them off the hook about having to get all “touchy feely” with us when we’re bothered about something (…

Is Your Weekend Family Time Suffering?

The majority of families are already overscheduled, overwhelmed and living a harried lifestyle during the week, but it doesn’t stop there. Like it or not, weekends are in the mix as well.

It’s early May and for my family, it’s not Mothers’ Day or my birthday (May 23rd!) that gets the most attention (sigh!), it’s the bane of our spring existence — baseball and softball season.  Well, I shouldn’t make it sound that awful. Truthfully, I enjoy watching my kids play, it’s just that it’s a seven-day-a-week sport and for us, it starts in mid-March and goes right thru to mid-July.  Growing up I remember my siblings and I playing sports throughout the week and also on Saturday, but I honestly can’t recall anything being scheduled on Sunday — that was always the sacred “family” day.  My children and many of our Gansett Moms’ Council families don’t know what an “off” day is.  Having practices, games, school events and birthday parties…

When schedules start to get too crazy you can always schedule in down time, play time, family time and keep that separate and protected from chore time and activity time. It is amazing how creative the family can be and how much fun you can have when you know you have 1 or 2 hours dedicated to doing nothing but play. Rediscover the toys in the bottom of the toy box and see how much you can make …   more ›

School Psychologist: Stand Up To 'Cowardly Behavior'

The Narragansett School District's work on anti-bullying ramped up after the recent rumor of a shooting threat at the high school.

On Thursday, April 5, Narragansett Police cars and uniformed patrolmen greeted students at the doors to Narragansett High School after social media sites buzzed Wednesday night with rumors that s shooting would occur.  On the Friday before that, March 30, an anonymous parent heard students talking about a possible shooting at the high school and immediately phoned the high school office. According to Narragansett Superintendent Kathy Sipala, “A parent heard her girls talking about this, phoned the high school and we then involved the police immediately, and then their investigation found that the threat was not accurate.” The week of the rumor, Sipala said the rumor was brought up again among the social media venues. “People talked on …
