Local Lowdown Surf Report: January 11 to 17, 2012

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

A major low pressure system will push up the East Coast this week, stirring up the Atlantic and producing overhead high waves. The fun starts on Thursday (1/12) with strong E winds building waves from chest to head high by the end of the day. On Friday (1/13) the winds switch to the SW, increase to 40 mph and begin grooming the overhead high rollers. Saturday (1/14) marks the end of the chaos, and this week’s best bet, as WNW winds tame chest to overhead high waves at East-facing beaches. Those strong winds will knock down what’s left of the waves on Sunday, leaving us with clean knee high peelers. Monday goes flat and then the whole cycle starts over again on Tuesday. Water temperature: 46 degrees Wednesday (1/11) Swell: 0-1 ft @ 9 …

Local Lowdown Surf Report: January 4 to 10, 2012

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

This week will start off calm, but a system cruising well off the coast on Thursday will push some well in toward the coast by the weekend. This week’s best bet will be Saturday (1/7), with waist to stomach high waves and offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Sunday has the potential for some small leftovers before the surf falls flat again on Monday. There is potential for building swell on Tuesday, but as always, that’s a long way off and subject to change. Water temperature: 47 degrees Wednesday (1/4) Swell: 1-2 ft @ 11 seconds SE Wind: 10-15 mph W Tides: Expect: Ankle to knee high waves with offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Thursday (1/5) Swell: 2 ft @ 7 seconds SSW Wind: 10-20 mph WNW Tides: Expect: Knee to thigh high waves …

Mother Nature is ushering in the New Year with plenty of swell! This week’s best bet is Wednesday (12/28), with head to overhead high waves and offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Other notable days include Saturday (12/31) and Monday (1/2). Water temperature: 49 degrees Wednesday (12/28) Swell: 5-7 ft @ 9 seconds SSW Wind: 15-30 mph WNW Tides: Expect: Head high waves with occasional overhead sets. Strong offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Thursday (12/29) Swell: 2-4 ft @ 9 seconds SSW Wind: 10-20 mph W Tides: Expect: Knee to waist high waves with clean conditions at East-facing beaches. Friday (12/30) Swell: 2-4 ft @ 7 seconds SSW Wind: 10-15 mph WSW Tides: Expect: Waist to chest high waves with onshore winds. Saturday (12/31) …

Local Lowdown Surf Report: December 22 to 27, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

This week’s best bet is Thursday (12/22), with waist to chest high waves and offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Friday (12/23) has the potential for some relaxing leftovers. If you asked for waves for Christmas, I’m afraid you won’t be getting any. Water temperature: 49 degrees Thursday (12/22) Swell: 2-4 ft @ 9 seconds S Wind: 5-20 mph WNW Tides: Expect: Waist to chest high waves with offshore winds at East-facing beaches. Strong winds will taper off in the afternoon. Friday (12/23) Swell: 2-3 ft @ 8 seconds S Wind: 5-15 mph N Tides: Expect: Knee to waist high waves with offshore winds at South-facing beaches. Saturday (12/24) Swell: 1-2 ft @ 8 seconds S Wind: 5-15 mph N switching NW around mid-day Tides: Expect: Knee high waves with …

Local Lowdown Surf Report: December 14 to 20, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

The water temperature is beginning to plummet, but on the plus side, sunset is finally starting to occur later. The increase in daylight hours will be slow at first, but soon you can look forward to after-work sessions instead of driving home in the dark after missing a day of swell. This week’s best bet is Wednesday (12/14), with waist high waves and light offshore winds at South-facing beaches. Friday (12/16) may pan out as well, with knee high waves and clean conditions. Sadly no major swell events on the horizon this week. Water temperature: 50 degrees Wednesday (12/14) Swell: 2-3 ft @ 10 seconds SE Wind: 5-15 mph N switching NE in the afternoon Tides: Expect: Waist high waves with offshore winds at South-facing beaches. Local Lowdown Surf Report: December 7 to 13, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

This week’s best bet is Wednesday (12/7) and Thursday (12/8). Look for cleaner, more organized waves on Thursday but with strong winds. A stalled low pressure system will keep this rain on top of us for another couple days until a cold front rushes in from the mid-West on Friday, bringing with it sunny skies but no swell. There may be another system building for next week, but it’s hard to tell if Tuesday’s good looking forecast will prevail. Will this streak of mid-week swell events continue? Tune in next week to find out! The old restaurant building at Rose Nulman Park has been demolished, but access to the parking lot is still blocked. Keep it in mind if you go surfing at Pt. Judith Lighthouse. Water temperature: 52 degrees Wednesday (…

Local Lowdown Surf Report: November 9 to 15, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

We’re being treated to a rather rare occurrence this week – Tropical Storm Sean! A massive low pressure system off the coast of Florida has formed enough to get a name. Sean will cruise on up the coast well off to sea, sending in swell from the SW. As the winds switch around Thursday night, get ready for strong offshore winds on Friday (11/11) and Saturday (11/12). With waist to chest high waves, they’re this week’s best bet. Water temperature: 56 degrees Wednesday (11/9) Swell: 2-3 ft @ 10 seconds SE Wind: 0-10 mph S Tides: Expect: Slightly choppy waist high waves. Thursday (11/10) Swell: 3-6 ft @ 10 seconds SE Wind: 5-10 mph SE switching ENE and finally blowing NW by dark Tides: Expect: Waist to chest high waves building in the afternoon…

Local Lowdown Surf Report: October 12 to 18, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

A low pressure system will move in over the next couple days, bringing rain and churning up some waves. Unfortunately the winds don’t look to be cooperating, so despite the better waves coming on Friday (10/14) and Saturday (10/15), this week’s best bet looks like Sunday (10/16), when the winds switch around to the West. And remember, if you surf near Pt. Judith Lighthouse, please be aware that Rose Nulman Park is currently closed indefinitely and the parking area has been blocked off. The roof of the old building has collapsed and the building has been condemned. Hopefully the situation will be resolved soon, but until then, please be respectful and do not trespass on the property. Water temperature: 64 degrees Wednesday (10/12) Swell: 2-…

Local Lowdown Surf Report: October 6 to 11, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

After the pleasant surprise of Hurricane Ophelia, which reached Category 4 status offshore and cruised by us last weekend, it unfortunately looks like we have run out of tropical wave-makers. The season isn’t quite over, but the outlook doesn’t look good. It sounds like a good weekend to scrap off dirty summer wax and put on a fresh coat of “cool” wax. Water temperature: 65 …

Local Lowdown Surf Report: September 28 to October 4, 2011

A weekly roundup of all the swell, tide and wind information you need to make the call.

We’ll begin October with some waves courtesy of Tropical Storm Ophelia. She’s forecasted to become a Category 1 hurricane by Saturday morning and will pass due east of us around Sunday afternoon. Friday (9/30) and Saturday (10/1) will be the beginnings of the swell, with the best conditions on Monday (10/3). This week’s best bet calls for waist to chest high waves and clean offshore winds at all beaches. And remember, if you surf near Pt. Judith Lighthouse, please be aware that Rose Nulman Park is currently closed indefinitely and the parking area has been blocked off. The roof of the old building has collapsed and the building has been condemned. Hopefully the situation will be resolved soon, but until then, please be respectful and do …
