The start of 2013 brings with it the start of the Winterguard season, the newest performance team for the Gansett school system.
The start of a new year brings a new season for Winterguard – It’s not called Winterguard because we start in April! What is Winterguard, you ask? Winterguard is so many things, and at the same time, it is not like anything you have seen before. Picture dancers and rhythmic gymnasts combined with cheerleading, a drill team and those pretty girls with the flags you see marching in the parade all wrapped up together! A team will compete to a pre-selected music piece and perform a high intense routine. Girls and boys are leaping about like gazelles on the Serengeti, then tumbling and spinning their bodies about, and that’s just most intros! If you want to be on a Winterguard team, you must learn how to use “weapons.” No, don’t worry, …

Maybe we should go to college at an older age.
While most moms were shopping in the stores for back to school supplies in August for their children, I was doing the same thing, only for me. That’s right, I was buying paper, pencils, notebooks, pens... All the "fun stuff" one needs to go to school. Only I had to buy books as well – “Ouch,” said my wallet, as I would take out my bank card from its leather clutches! My decision to return to school was for many reasons, some more personal than others, but overall it was my decision. Only my household and a select few knew of my plans to go back to school. Why you might ask? Well, I felt a little embarrassed. I mean, I just turned 40 and now I’m getting schoolbooks. But really, is there an age limit? Apparently not at CCRI. There is …

Joyce is handling hitting the big 40 :(
Well, it happens to the best of us, we get older, and hopefully wiser. As I hit the big 4-0, I look back on the last year of my 30's. Thirty-nine was not bad, I didnt spend the entire year worrying about the next number, quite the opposite! Lets do a quick recap of the last year for me. Last August I woke on my birthday to a hurricane, Yeah me! I was alittle busy planning the big event...my wedding! Thats right, I was finally getting married! Oh and what a day it was! Low 90's in October for an outdoor ceremony, Murphy must have had the day off from Law! We went to Dinsey for our honeymoon, it was wonderful! Cant wait till we win the Powerball to go again! In the winter I was graced with ANOTHER team to coach in Guard! Making so …

Narragansett wins big on opening night!
Every year in mid-August, you can find a line of traffic leading to the fairgrounds in Richmond off Route 138. This year’s first day wasn’t as bad for traffic, as far as getting there. Maybe it was the weather and Mother Nature keeping some at home, or the time of day that I went. Whatever the case it was still a grand opening day. The Washington County Fair has many different games, events and prizes to be won. The biggest one to me is the royalty contest. That’s right, we have a local pageant for young ladies to enter! The WCF selects one girl to be its princess and one to be its queen. Each young lady has to meet certain requirements, submit an application and be judged by a panel of three. The Sunday before the fair seven girls …
