The start of 2013 brings with it the start of the Winterguard season, the newest performance team for the Gansett school system.
The start of a new year brings a new season for Winterguard – It’s not called Winterguard because we start in April! What is Winterguard, you ask? Winterguard is so many things, and at the same time, it is not like anything you have seen before. Picture dancers and rhythmic gymnasts combined with cheerleading, a drill team and those pretty girls with the flags you see marching in the parade all wrapped up together! A team will compete to a pre-selected music piece and perform a high intense routine. Girls and boys are leaping about like gazelles on the Serengeti, then tumbling and spinning their bodies about, and that’s just most intros! If you want to be on a Winterguard team, you must learn how to use “weapons.” No, don’t worry, …

Joyce is handling hitting the big 40 :(
Well, it happens to the best of us, we get older, and hopefully wiser. As I hit the big 4-0, I look back on the last year of my 30's. Thirty-nine was not bad, I didnt spend the entire year worrying about the next number, quite the opposite! Lets do a quick recap of the last year for me. Last August I woke on my birthday to a hurricane, Yeah me! I was alittle busy planning the big event...my wedding! Thats right, I was finally getting married! Oh and what a day it was! Low 90's in October for an outdoor ceremony, Murphy must have had the day off from Law! We went to Dinsey for our honeymoon, it was wonderful! Cant wait till we win the Powerball to go again! In the winter I was graced with ANOTHER team to coach in Guard! Making so …

The combined teams march as one at this years Fire Fighters Day Parade.
Left, left, left, right, left ... ok so we really don't say that when marching; we actually use dance counts ... 5-6-7-8! The teams for both the Narraganasett High School and the Narragansett Pier School, now known as Gansett Guard, marched Sunday to the beat of a different drummer, literally. The girls started practicing a few weeks ago with the assumption they would be marching in front of the Pier Middle school band, but due to Murphys Law, the band was unable to accompany them. Now Murphys Law states "If anything can go wrong, it will", and this month that was the motto of this group! The first speed bump in this parade was that the girls' uniforms, which belong not to the schools, but the coach, went missing. The school had its …

The Pier Middle School sadly adds another stepping stone to their Memorial Garden for Maria DiCicco.
Last week as many of you were working, doing errands, chores or whatever your Thursday afternoon may entail, the students and staff of Narragansett Pier Middle School gathered to remember a beautiful little girl. As students were called down to the gym grade by grade, my daughter and I watched while sitting in the bleachers. We saw many faces that we knew from our guard teams, and many faces that we just met. As the students settled, I noticed stationed by every class stood the staff of the school, along with a few other teachers from the other two Narragansett schools. The principal, Dr. Ahern, addressed the students, staff, friends and family of Maria DiCicco. She began with the explanation of the memorial garden, for many of these …

Both the high school and middle school bands show off many talents.
Most people probably enjoyed a relaxing three day long holiday weekend, that is unless you are a member of Narragansett Music Department! The weekend started early for most, and this is also true for the High School Music Departmnt. Friday morning about 10 am, both the members of the Most people probably enjoyed a relaxing three-day holiday weekend, that is, unless you are a member of the Narragansett Music Department! The weekend started early for most, and this is also true for the Narragansett High School Music Department. Friday morning at about 10 am, both the chorus and band packed up my van and the director’s car with instruments, then boarded the school bus for a trip to Lincoln, MA to compete in the Great East Music Festival…

Both teams earn a seat in NESBA finals!
What have the past few months been like for you? The weather has been a little mild as far as New England weathers can be, so not a lot of shoveling, or sanding, or complaining about all the work you've had to do... Well, I know of two teams that have worked so hard and the proof was in the pudding this weekend! Last year, I kept you filled in on the ups and downs of the Narragansett High School Winterguard teams as they traveled around New England competing in the local circuit, the New England Scholastic Band Association. I am pleased to inform you that this year their were two teams! That's right, the Pier School has their very own team, and I refer to them as my flag babies! Both teams trained together to learn the basic moves, and …
