Gingerbread Houses Help Build Real Homes in Kingston

The South County Habitat for Humanity raised $2,900 in its holiday-themed fundraiser.

Thanks to help from the proceeds of South County Habitat for Humanity's third annual Gingerbread House Building Contest, crews will break ground on four affordable homes in Kingston. The contest helped solve two housing crises this holiday season:  One, a real housing crisis where not a single contiguous Washington County town meets the state’s standard of 10% long-term affordable housing; the other, a crisis in which Gingerbread men and women are tragically homeless (and often eaten). “The thirty gingerbread houses entered in the competition this year were incredibly creative," said Lou Raymond, executive director. SK Education Foundation Raises More Than $5,000 With Amazing Race

Fundraiser sent teams all over town for a scavenger hunt.

The parking lot of The Glass Station in Wakefield was quite the spectacle Sunday afternoon, as teams participating in the South Kingstown Education Foundation’s Amazing Race fundraiser hula-hooped their hearts out. The hula hoop contest was just a portion of the second annual scavenger hunt contest, styled after reality television show “The Amazing Race.” Nineteen teams competed in the fundraiser, which raised more than $5,000 for South Kingstown public schools. Teams were comprised of families and groups of friends, with most teams having four members. Together they raced around South Kingstown on foot, deciphering clues given to them at the start of the race to discover where each challenge was located.  Clues like “Ghosts and goblins! …
