SK Pair Charged With Elderly Abuse

Joshua Champlin, 28, and Merry-Belle Champlin, 50, are charged with neglecting the care of a 78-year-old family member.

Joshua Champlin, 28, and Merry-Belle Camplin, 50, both of 42 Zinns Drive, South Kingstown, were arrested at about noon on March 18 and each charged with a single count of elderly abuse, a felony. According to South Kingstown police and investigators from the state’s Department of Elderly Affairs, the abuse took place from Aug. 9, 2011 to Oct. 9, 2011. Police said that during that time, Joshua and Merry-Belle served as daily caretakers for a 78-year-old female family member. AG Declines to Move Forward on 3 Cases

Three unrelated local cases are dismissed after the attorney general's office decides not to prosecute.

According to files at Washington County Superior Court and Fourth Division District Court, the attorney general has decided not to proceed forward in three felony cases. Reasons for the dismissals were not included in court records. Walsh Bill Would Require Merit Selection for Magistrates

According to Walsh, the process for selecting magistrates should be transparent.

Rep. Donna M. Walsh has submitted legislation to require merit selection and vetting by the Judicial Nominating Commission for magistrates in Rhode Island. Magistrates are court officers that generally preside over uncontested cases, though their duties vary from court to court. Currently, most of the 20 magistrates in Rhode Island’s court system are appointed by the presiding judges of their court, with confirmation from the Senate. Under Walsh’s bill (2013-H 5022), magistrates would be selected in the same manner as judges – the state Judicial Nominating Commission would submit to the governor a list of candidates it deems appropriate, from which the governor could choose a candidate to nominate on the basis of merit. Police Charge 2 URI Students With Home Invasion

According to Narragansett police, URI students Blake R. Hinds and Alexander Mansi were subdued by the residents of 120 Sakonnet Boulevard.

Hinds and Alexander Mansi, 19, were arrested at about 11 a.m. Wednesday and charged with felony breaking and entering, felony assault with a dangerous weapon and felony conspiracy. According to police, they received a report of a break-in at 120 Sakonnet Boulevard. Police said when they arrived, tenants had subdued Hinds and Mansi, who were armed with a crowbar and brass knuckles. Police said that based on interviews, Mansi and Hinds were familiar with the home and targeted it specifically. Police identified Mansi and Hinds as University of Rhode Island students living at …

Police charge a North Kingstown man with violating five no-contact orders on the way to court.

On Way to Court, Man Charged With Five Domestic Felonies Keith W. Mongillo, 34, of 60 George Ave., North Kingstown, was arrested at about 9:25 a.m. on Oct. 31 and charged with five counts of violating a protective order. The charges were all elevated to felonies because of past offenses. According to police, they received a report from a Cranston couple that Mongillo had attempted to run them off the road, and also sworn at them. Slocum Woman Charged With Faking Prescription

More charges are filed against Melissa Clark, 43, for obtaining prescriptions illegally, police say.

Melissa Clark, 43, of 240 Railroad Ave., Slocum, was arrested at about 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 10 and charged with a felony – false representation to obtain a controlled substance. According to police, on Sept. 5 they were told by a pharmacist at Rite Aid that she had received a call from a nurse practitioner, claiming that Clark was a former employee and writing out prescriptions for herself. Police confirmed that Clark had gotten the prescriptions filled on Sept. 3 via a witness statement, and spoke with the nurse practitioner on Sept. 6. Based on previous arrests, police were …

URI Student Charged With Drunken Driving in Stolen Car

According to police, Miles Daileader, 19, stole and drove a Narragansett woman’s car while drunk.

Daileader, 19, of 11 Cavalier Ave., Narragansett, was arrested at about 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 4 and charged with drunken driving and driving a car without the consent of the owner, which is a felony. According to police, an officer traveling about 40 miles per hour in his patrol car on Boston Neck Road was quickly overtaken by another car. The officer said he pulled to the side to avoid being hit, at which point the car speed up and passed him on the left. Police said a traffic stop was made near the Mormon Church on Boston Neck Road. SK Man Charged With Cocaine Possession

South Kingstown police have charged Samuel R. Cummer, 21, with felony cocaine possession.

Cummer, 21, of 179 Hunt Ave., South Kingstown, was arrested at about 11:25 a.m. on Sept. 6 and charged with possession of cocaine, a felony. According to police, they executed a search warrant at Cummer’s home on Sept. 6. The search revealed a suitcase on Cummer’s bedroom floor, and police said a small baggie of white powder was hidden in the suitcase. Police said that when asked about the powder, Cummer told them that he had forgotten about it, because it was “bad [weak] stuff.” According to police, the substance field tested positive as cocaine. Woman Charged With 6 Prescription Pill Offenses

Narragansett’s Christen M. Conley, 38, is charged with six felony counts of misrepresentation to obtain prescription pills.

Conley, 38, of 7 Shagbark Road, Narragansett, was arrested at about 4:22 p.m. on Sept. 4 and charged with six felony counts of false representation to obtain a controlled substance. According to police, Conley worked as a secretary for a nurse practitioner, and in her job duties, had forged prescriptions for a family member for Soma, Vicodin and other painkillers. Police said that when questioned about the prescriptions, Conley admitted to filing them with CVS, using the nurse practitioner’s number. The medication was used by Conley, she told police, not the family …

Gansett Police Arrest MA Bank Robbery Suspect

According to Narragansett police, Westerly's Richard Buzon, 29, was arrested without incident on a Massachusetts police warrant for a bank robbery.

According to Narragansett police, a Westerly man was arrested without incident Monday morning on a fishing boat in Galilee for a bank robbery committed in Shrewsbury, MA on May 29. Police said the arrest of Richard Buzon, 29, happened at about 9:30 a.m., near the fishing vessel Provider. Narragansett police noted that there was also a South Kingstown police warrant out for Buzon's arrest, for two felony counts of violating a protective order. According to online records at the Rhode Island Judiciary, Buzon has more than 25 entries, stemming from 2000 to 2012.
