RIHS Football Poll – Johnston tumbles down the polls after being upset in the Division II playoffs.
After being upset by Central in the opening round of the Division II playoffs, the Johnston Panthers have dropped from No. 5 to No. 11 in the Rhode Island Sports Media High School Football Poll. No. 10 West Warwick and No. 13 Central took advantage of the loss, moving up four and five sports, respectively. The highest ranked Division II team is now Cumberland, at No. 5. La Salle remains in the top spot of the poll, collecting all 14 first place votes, followed by fellow Division I playoff teams Hendricken, Portsmouth and Cranston East. Portsmouth and East flip-flopped in the polls after the Thunderbolts barely beat South Kingstown 23-17. Thanksgiving games for most teams take place either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. La Salle remains in the top spot, and they remain undefeated.
Back after a week’s absence – thanks Sandy! – not much has changed in the top six. Although the order has switched around a bit, La Salle, Hendricken, Cranston East and Portsmouth remain the top four in the state. La Salle remains undefeated, while the other three have traded wins and losses against one another. Behind the top four in Division I lurk the best two teams – so far – in Division II, Johnston and Cumberland. After the top six is where the ballot gets jumbled, with a mixture of mediocre Division I programs, good Division II programs and great Division III programs. La Salle takes all 14 first place votes in the latest Rhode Island Sports Media Football Poll, after Hendricken is beaten by Portsmouth.
All 14 first place votes went to No. 1 La Salle this week, after No. 3 Hendricken took its first loss of the season, 39-13, to No. 2 Portsmouth. The win puts the Patriots in good position for a home game in the Division I playoffs, as long as they can win Friday against No. 4 Cranston East. The Thunderbolts can muddy the picture further with a win of their own though. The big movers in this week’s poll were No. 13 West Warwick, No. 18 Westerly and No. 19 East Providence, although for the wrong reasons. All three teams fell at least five spots after losses. Inaction is the new action, as the top seven remain unchanged in the Rhode Island Sports Media Football Poll, after a weekend of mostly winning. No. 3 Cranston East lost, but it was to Hendricken, and while they lost a first place vote and about 25 points in the polls, it wasn’t enough to drop below No. 4 Portsmouth. No. 7 Barrington lost to Tolman, which caused the Tigers to jump two spots in the polls, up into a tie at No. 10 with East Greenwich. However, the loss of 30 poll points for the Eagles weren’t enough for No. 8 West Warwick to overtake them. All 20 teams from last week’s poll stayed in this week. Football Poll – The top five remains unchanged, as South Kingstown drops out of the poll for the first time this year.
The top five – La Salle, Hendricken, Cranston East, Portsmouth and Johnston – remains unchanged in the latest Rhode Island High School Football Media Poll. Cumberland moved up one spot, to No. 6, following a convincing 41-6 win against unranked North Kingstown. La Salle is still ranked No. 1 in the state, but Hendricken is gaining, and Cranston East also remains in the hunt for the top ranking in the fourth week of the Rhode Island High School Football Media Poll. The top four of the poll remain unchanged, as La Salle, Hendricken, Cranston East and Portsmouth all won their games. The Johnston Panthers round out the top five, thanks to a 48-0 drubbing of Toll Gate. Shea (No. 15) and Coventry (No. 20) are new to the poll this week. RIHS Football Media Poll – South Kingstown slips several spots after losing to Hendricken on Friday.
Thanks to an impressive win over No. 3 Portsmouth, top-ranked La Salle has solidified its grip on the No. 1 spot in the latest Rhode Island High School Football Media Poll. La Salle gained six points and three more first place votes from last week, increasing its lead on No. 2 Hendrickren from two points to nine. The Hawks won their game, shutting out South Kingstown. The rest of the poll stayed relatively stable, except for two teams. Cumberland moved up four spots, from No. 16 to No. 12. The Clippers are 1-1, with a competitive 12-6 loss to Division I Cranston West and a shutout of Division II Central, 28-0. Woonsocket plummeted in the rankings, from No. 10 to No. 19. RIHS Football Media Poll: South Kingstown drops several spots after losing to West Warwick, and Narragansett remains unranked.
La Salle remains at the top of the Rhode Island High School Football Media Poll, although their margin has narrowed to just two points over Bishop Hendricken thanks to an increased electorate. After just nine ballots were cast for the preseason poll, the ranks have swollen to 13 voters for week two. As a result, La Salle’s point margin for first has shrunk from nine points to just two. The No. 3 team, Portsmouth, remains the same. After that, well, the first week of league and non-league games sure has made a mess of the poll. Expect a lot of turbulence in the next few weeks though, before things settle down after five games or so. The poll is compiled thanks to the hard work of Eric Rueb, a sports editor with Southern Rhode Island Newspapers.
