Narragansett uses a 25-0 run over the end of the first and the start of the second to beat the Avengers 54-48.
PROVIDENCE – With a decisive 10-minute, 25-0 run, Narragansett took a lead in the second half it wouldn’t surrender against East Greenwich en route to a 54-48 win Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Division II girls’ playoffs. Senior Maggie Salomone led the Mariners with 23 points, including a pair of 3s and two free throws during Narragansett’s run. Salomone chipped in three steals as well. Her play at the end of the first half helped start the Mariners run, which stretched from two minutes remaining in the first half to 8:26 remaining in the second half. During that time frame, the Mariners repeatedly turned over the Avengers, who also went cold from long range after six first half 3-pointers. East Greenwich didn’t hit a 3 in the second …

Middletown takes advantage of two turnovers by East Greenwich in the second half to take the Division III Super Bowl 33-21.
EAST GREENWICH – Middletown capitalized on a pair of East Greenwich turnovers early in the second half to score 14 points and salt away a Division III Super Bowl victory, 33-21. The Islanders had a 19-7 lead with 1:28 left in the first half, but EG’s Andrew Miner ran a picture perfect two-minute, no huddle offense to score in about 60 seconds. The Avengers went into the break trailing 19-14 as a result. However, Middletown held the Avengers to a three-and-out on their initial possession of the second half. East Greenwich limited Middletown to six plays on their drive, but Alex Cleary couldn’t handle a punt, and the Islanders took over on EG’s 33-yard line. Shemar Vincent recovered for Middletown. It took Middletown seven plays, but …

Middletown is bound for the Division III Super Bowl after a commanding 35-14 win against Narragansett in the semifinals.
MIDDLETOWN – On their opening possession, the Middletown Islanders looked like they had stalled out against the Narragansett Mariners. The Islanders faced a 4th-and-18 from 35 yards out, and Narragansett had seemingly righted the ship after giving up long gains on the ground to Connor Russ and Randolph Butler. However, on the play, Middletown quarterback Justin Sellar rolled out on a waggle and found Russ in the middle of the field, after Russ was left wide open. It gave the Islanders a 7-0 lead, one they wouldn’t lose, and it was the first of five unanswered touchdowns for Middletown. Narragansett would only score two touchdowns after Middletown pulled its defensive starters, for a 35-14 final. Middletown will play No. 2 seed East …

Narragansett can’t dig itself out from an 18-0 deficit at the half and falls 24-14 to the East Greenwich Avengers.
NARRAGANSETT – East Greenwich’s Andrew Miner had three touchdown passes and was named offensive MVP in a 24-14 win for the Avengers on Thanksgiving Day at Narragansett High School. The Avengers (9-1, 7-1 Division III) took a 18-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Although the Mariners (5-5, 4-4 Division III) made a run in the second half, they never came within a possession of East Greenwich. Junior Carney Crawford scored the first touchdown for the Avengers, getting six yards on a pitch with 4:41 left in the first quarter. The teams then traded stalled drives and turnovers, until the final four minutes of the second quarter. With 2:35 left in the first half, Miner completed a four-yard strike to senior Alexander Cleary, …

The Rebels will be favored for the first time in a while in a football game, and the Mariners have a possible playoff preview with East Greenwich.
Thanksgiving means many things to many different people, and for a large portion of the community, it’ll be a day dominated by football. The Narragansett Mariners will host the East Greenwich Avengers, while the South Kingstown Rebels travel to North Kingstown to face the Skippers. It’s the traditional rivalry game for both teams. Here are our capsule previews for both. All statistics from Rhode Island High School Sports and the RIIL. NARRAGANSETT VS. EAST GREENWICH The Mariners (5-4, 4-3 Division III) host the Avengers (8-1, 6-1 Division III) at 10 a.m. at Narragansett High School. Although both teams are playoff bound, the Thanksgiving showdown won’t factor into this at all. The seedings for the Division III playoffs are already set, …

East Greenwich completes a perfect Division II season with a 10-4 win in the title game vs. South Kingstown.
PROVIDENCE – Except for a brief stretch in the second quarter, East Greenwich controlled all of a 10-4 win in the Division II boys’ lacrosse title game against South Kingstown at Rhode Island College Whether the Rebels were rattled or the pressure from the Avengers was just too intense, South Kingstown struggled to pass well or play under control. In contrast, East Greenwich capitalized on the South Kingstown penalties, and dominated time of possession. The Avengers scored the games first three goals, and kept the Rebels from scoring until eight minutes into the second quarter. South Kingstown briefly made a game of it at that point, scoring again with 1:47 left in the first half. The Rebels’ lone stretch of better play than the Avengers …

Rebels drop to 3-3 on the season.
East Greenwich beat South Kingstown in Girls Tennis Monday at home by a score of 7-0, improving their record to 5-0. EGHS sophomore Aleksandra Drljaca, in number one singles, easily defeated Alexa Pagliaro, 6-0, 6-0. Drljaca was one of the top eight girls high school players in the state last year. “It’s tough to find anybody that’s going to match her ability,” said EGHS Coach Marc Brocato. It took longer for Heather Shen at second singles, but the sophomore came out on top over SK’s Cassie Collinson, 6-2, 6-1. Elizabeth Blessing defeated Jackie Miech, 6-0, 6-0, in the third singles spot. And it was Kerri Whelan over Gillian Madden, 6-0, 6-0, in fourth singles. In doubles play, EG’s first doubles team of Karleigh Caramagno and Haruku …

The rivalry between the two teams is currently tied 5-5.
The Narragansett Mariners will look to maintain the momentum of a thrilling, last-second homecoming win as they host the East Greenwich Avengers 10 a.m. Thanksgiving Day. Homecoming was the last game played by Narragansett (6-4, 3-4 Division III), as they made sure the Classical Purple stayed winless (0-10, 0-8 Division III). It took a Hail Mary from senior running back Julien Nelson to senior wideout Chris Salomone as time expired to score the Mariners' only touchdown. Salomone then kicked the extra point and a field goal in the first overtime to win the game. Offense has been the problem for Narragansett lately. In the Mariners' last three games, they have scored just 14 points, and 10 came with no time technically left on the clock in …

Prout boys' soccer scores first, but East Greenwich pressure through the rest of the first half and early in the second leads to two goals. The girls lose 4-0 earlier in the day.
EAST GREENWICH – The Prout School Crusaders struck first, but the true to their name East Greenwich Avengers struck last, as the home team used two second half goals to win 2-1 late Tuesday night in the Division II playoffs. Prout (10-8-1) and East Greenwich (14-0-4) both waited about 45 minutes for their game to start, as Smithfield needed penalty kicks to defeat Westerly after 100 minutes of scoreless soccer. Prout head coach Tim Ryan said the wait and the conditions – temperatures plunged into the low 40s as a drizzle coated the turf and players the entire game – wore his players down as they headed into the second half. "It's a tough night and a late start," he said. "It was a little difficult to get started." The Crusaders scored the …

I am not a football mom, I band mom and a guard mom, so I'm not at the games for the football but I have to say I feel Gansett did a great job playing against EG. I am also proud of the Gansett parents I saw shaking the hands of EG parents and saying "Congrats". Sportmanship is a huge part of the youth games and I know winning is everything to some, but not to all. Way to go Gansett! You made …   more ›
