Release courtesy of RIDOT. Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced that the first repair contract for road damage caused by Hurricane Sandy is scheduled to begin Saturday, Nov. 3 – just five days after the storm hit Rhode Island. South Kingstown and Narragansett continue to clean up in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
7:06 p.m. – Okay folks, we’re going to be finishing up with the updates soon. I’m pretty beat, and I need to get some rest! Thank you to everyone who followed along today. To tie up some loose ends: - As of 7 p.m., Narragansett still hadn’t made a decision about whether school was on or off. When that does come down the pike, we will announce it on our Twitter and Facebook. - Tomorrow, we go back to more of a “normal” news day. While there is still going to be Sandy-related coverage, I think we’ve covered the damage as adequately as we can, and the renovation and rebuilding stories can be parceled out a bit more evenly over the next few days and weeks. So, yes, there will be a police beat tomorrow. Two, in fact, as long as I’m able to make…

@ Gov - Man, I sure hope so. At least the restoration of power everywhere else has a nice cascade effect, and I no longer have to fight for an outlet at the coffee shop.   more ›
Day three of our hurricane coverage will focus on the aftermath.
7:51 p.m. – Elizabeth McNamara, our East Greenwich Patch local editor, spent her afternoon in Kingston. Here are some notes from her: - At URI, classes will resume tomorrow, Oct. 31. Power was out at the Cumberland Farms at Kingston Emporium, but they were open "dawn to dusk" – cash only, no perishables. The traffic lights were out at Upper College and 138. - Melissa Branch on Northup Street lost a tree in her front yard: "I've got great neighbors. They got fire wood and I got the tree out of my driveway!" A photo can be seen in our gallery. - Lauren and Adam Spink, at 68 High Street, were inside their house when the large tree in their front yard fell over, hitting the house. "We heard the roots in the basement," Adam, a contractor, said…

Hi Louise, I'm not sure why that is. I know that because of the heavy site usage, we are having some stress-load related problems, unfortunately.   more ›

6:50 p.m. – If you’re reading this, congrats! You’re still one of the few people in South County with power, or a charged cell phone, or heck, you don’t even live in the path of the hurricane, probably. Right now, according to National Grid’s outage map, almost everyone in South Kingstown and Narragansett is suffering from a lack of service. No restoration time is estimated yet – That would be dependent on when the hurricane died down, which probably isn’t going to happen until 10 p.m. at the earliest. The actual numbers for outages: About 50,000 customers in Washington County are without power. In Narragansett, 7,650 of the Grid’s 10,486 customers are without power – 72.9 percent. In South Kingstown, it’s 11,280 of 14,413 customers – 78.3…

10:35 p.m. – This will be our final update for the night, folks! Thanks for following along today, and hopefully – knock on wood – we’ll have enough power to update frequently tomorrow. Speaking of that! We will update as much as the power situation allows, starting shortly before 6 a.m. Last year with Hurricane Irene, I lost power about three or fours hour in, and didn’t get it back until a day later. If and when my power does go out, the updates will be a bit more sporadic. There will also be a live chat for those of you who want to follow along on your PC, Mac or smartphone, similar to last year. Keep your eyes peeled for that panel. Because of the impending storm and the very great chance of everyone losing power, we will not be …
