A recap of my week in the southwest and hopefully a motivator for you to do something similar in the near future.
This week I’m going to deviate from any major words of wisdom like I have done in the past. These are just a few key events which have occurred over my spring break this week which I would like to share with you in hopes of you following suit in the future. I spent this past week with my aunt and uncle in the southwest; I stayed at their house outside of Phoenix, Ariz. for a few days and we then hopped on over to Albuquerque, N.M. to see a couple of March Madness basketball games. It was a spectacular several days, rest mixed with activity and much to look forward to down the road. In Arizona we went to see a play in downtown Phoenix, saw a Cactus League baseball game between the Angels and Diamondbacks, had time to soak up some sunshine …

Middletown edged out The Prout School in a competitive third place game at the Junior Varsity Tournament hosted by Narragansett High School on Sunday.
NARRAGANSETT - The third place game of the tournament almost foreshadowed the final, as Middletown held off a late surge by the Prout School to win 45-44. Middletown led 45-43 with seven seconds remaining, when Jacob Reilly accidentally fouled Casey Farell about 35 feet from the basket. With a chance to tie, Farell calmly sank the first shot. However, Middletown called timeout, and the icing seemed to work, as Farell missed the second shot. In a bit of bad luck for the Crusaders, they had mostly avoided fouling in the second half. After the missed free throw, Prout gave a foul, but Middletown wasn’t in the bonus yet. As a result, the Islanders inbounded the ball with a second left and were able to dribble the clock out. Connor Russ and …

In both the girls’ and the boys’ tournaments held Wednesday night, the Narragansett Mariners emerged victorious, while both South Kingstown teams suffered defeats.
Mariners Extinguish Avengers’ Crusade NARRAGANSETT – On Wednesday night, the Narragansett High School boys’ basketball team shot a paltry 42.9 percent from the free throw line. Unfortunately for the Division III East Greenwich Avengers, that was the only deficient part of the Mariners’ game. Led by drives to the rim from seniors Pat Doyle and Pat Degnan, and a strong low post effort from Jeff Pistacchio, Narragansett easily took care of the Avengers 71-42. Doyle finished with 16, and while Degnan only had five points, his drives opened up the lane for Pistacchio to work. The junior finished with 14 points. Narragansett (3-2, 1-2 Division II-South) head coach David Gee subbed liberally in the second half, but his bench had little trouble …

Austin Cilley's 29 points and seven 3-pointers propels the Bulldogs over Narragansett.
WESTERLY - Narragansett Mariners head coach David Gee knew the Westerly Bulldogs could shoot. He just wasn’t expecting for all of their shots to go in. A 29-point performance from Westerly guard Austin Cilley, including seven three-pointers, and a triple-double by Michael-Thomas Sciro (11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) propelled the Bulldogs past the Mariners last night, 83-68. Westerly widened a 53-48 lead with ten minutes to play to a 73-57 advantage five minutes later thanks to timely three-pointers. The Bulldogs made seven of their last eight shots - including 4-for-4 from three - and shot 12-for-23 from behind the arc for the game while the Mariners went 6-for-17 from the floor in the closing minutes. Gee was surprised at how all of…

It's never too late to dive into the college basketball vortex. Sports play a significant role for college students in that they gather with thousands of their classmates and unite to cheer their team on. Don't miss out on these experiences!
Okay, okay, so it’s still a few weeks until the college basketball season tips off. But come on, if you don’t go to your team’s games you’re missing out on a hell of a good time. Last Friday, Marquette hosted its annual “Marquette Madness” event in which the basketball team is introduced, has a dunk contest and scrimmages each other. It’s usually marked the official start of basketball season and draws a gigantic crowd. The inspiration for this column comes from several special guests who were present at Marquette Madness, most notably former Golden Eagle Dwyane Wade (featured in the above video). Students feverishly used the Twitter hashtag #bringwadetomadness in hopes of having him make an appearance and play with the team, for old time’…

Just in case you did not get enough March Madness last week and can not wait until the NCAA Tournament reboots on Thursday.
Step back, catch your breath and enjoy the break in the Madness. The 2011 NCAA men’s basketball tournament kicked off last Tuesday with the new extra play-in game format, and went on for six straight days before mercifully taking a break on Monday. The tournament will pick up again on Thursday, which makes this the perfect time to talk about the tourney. Currently on ESPN.com my bracket is ranked 4,230,796th out of the nearly six million filled out on the site, so despite that knock on my credibility about writing a column on March Madness, I’m going to do it anyways. The following is my version of ramblings and rants that I’ve been thinking about throughout the tournament thus far. 1. Watch the University of Florida regional semifinal…
