Aw – Cat Rescued From Tree by ACO, Fire Department

According to Art Smith, the rescued cat – Jane – remains available for adoption.

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the Narragansett Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction. At about 1:12 p.m. on Feb. 27, police received a report of a black and white shorthair cat stuck in a tree on Wood Sorrel Terrace. According to Narragansett Animal Control Officer Art Smith, the cat appeared to be about 30 feet up and mobile. As a result, he advised the calling party to wait another day, since cats often got themselves down. However, Smith said that he was called back at about 8:21 a.m. on March 1, because the cat still hadn’t gotten itself down. Smith said that as a result, he and a ladder unit from the Narragansett Fire Department went to rescue the cat at about …

Last week had a cat caught in a tree (for 3 days) at work in NK and the NK Fire Department and NK Animal control refused to help get it out of the tree. Finally a nice person from the NK Animal Refuge came and got the cat.   more ›

Puppy Bowl: Rhode Island Dogs to Take the Field

Three puppies from a local shelter will battle it out in Puppy Bowl IX on Super Bowl Sunday.

After the disappointment on Championship Weekend, New England Patriots fans may not be all that enthused for the big game this Sunday. But it turns out, Rhode Islanders have a dog in the race after all.  The Super Bowl isn't the only big game this weekend, and dog lovers in Rhode Island have a big reason to cheer on Super Bowl Sunday. How Much Is That Doggie In The Window? Most Don't Care

R.I. ranks 47th in the country for dog ownership and 43rd for pet ownership overall, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Rhode Island ranks 47th for dog ownership with 29.3 percent of households owning a dog. Rhode Island also ranked in the bottom 10 for pet and cat ownership in 2011. In 2006, which was the last time the AVMA put together the sourcebook, Rhode Island again made the bottom 10 list of pet owners, ranking 43rd with 53.9 percent of households owning a pet. The survey is conducted by the AVMA every five years and always includes a breakdown of pet ownership by state. The most recent survey, conducted in 2012 but based on December 31, 2011 numbers, reveals that the top 10 pet-owning states are: Vermont where 70…
