Two Boy Scouts of Troop 1 Narragansett recently completed National Youth Leadership Training at Camp Champlain in Cranston. Life Scout Alex Millen and Star Scout Adam Marasco completed six days of Boy Scout White Stag training while camping and learning from the nationally acclaimed program that has been part of Boy Scouts since 1959. The White Stag NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. Alex and Adam, both of Narragansett High School, were selected with 80 other scouts from across Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, based on their rank, ability and recommendation of their Scout Master. Members of Troop 1 Narragansett enjoyed a two-day canoe trip down the Pawcatuck–Wood River the first weekend of May. The boys were led by Senior Patrol Leader Will Prior and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Alex Millen. The party of 15 enjoyed the misty ride across Worden’s Pond and entered the Pawcatuck River alongside the Great Swamp on Saturday. For the next eight hours, the boys and leaders traversed logs, several dams, raging rapids and powerful waterfalls. The group enjoyed a dinner of fish, rice, fresh fruit salad and a quinoa salad. A nightcap of smores and campfire popcorn ended a super day in nature near Wood River Junction. On Sunday the group cooked some Johnny Cakes, home fries, cereal, fresh brewed coffee and juice. They …

Virginia Beach, VA – Narragansett wrestlers Michael Gallagher and Alexander Millen had strong showings at the 23rd annual National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. In the center, there were 28 wrestling mats spread out for four days with thousands of fellow wrestlers from all over the country, testing their skills and strength against one another. Gallagher took his 45-2 record as the runner-up in the Rhode Island 160-pound weight class against other sophomores. Unfortunately, Michael’s first match was against the defending 145-pound freshman national champion, Nathan Marek from Oklahoma. Gallagher tried hard but he could not keep up with Marek’s take downs. In early March, two local Rhode Island middle school champions won their New England Wrestling titles, as they defeated the best in New England, while two high school wrestlers plan to take on the nation. James Sauro and Chris Storti, eighth graders at Narragansett Pier School, won the 147 pound and 190 pound weight classes respectively. A handful of other youths also placed or wrestled well in the New Englands. NHS freshman Alex Millen and sophomore Michael Gallagher will take part in the High School Coaches National Tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia during the last week of March. Narragansett sophomore Michael Gallagher took the 160-pound weight division Saturday at the 2012 Smithfield Tournament, the top finish for the Mariners. According to TrackWrestling, Gallagher is now 36-1 on the year. He beat Johnston’s Joe Pecchia by a 5-4 decision in the finals, his third match of the day. At 195 pounds, Greg Hamilton took second place, and Alex Millen finished in third at 220. Also competing for the Mariners were Seamus Mathieu (113), Austin Ranney (120), Rob Peterson (126), Matt McGreen (132), Reed Nelson (138), Daniel Stern-Lonczak (145), Jim Cook (152) and Mitchell Kennedy (170). The Narragansett Pier School can add two more wrestling champions to its honor roll, as eighth graders James Sauro and Chris Storti won their weight divisions Saturday at the middle school state tournament. According to information provided by head coach and Pier School athletic director Mike Millen, Sauro improved his overall record to 29-0 and picked up his second state championship, this time at 140 pounds. Last year, Sauro won a title wrestling at 119 pounds. Storti improved his record to 34-1, winning the state title at 185 pounds. His lone loss in his middle school career came at last year’s state final. Sixth grader Cole McGill also had a strong showing at the tournament.
