It's Really Hot - Poor Air Quality Today

All regular RIPTA buses and trolleys, excluding special services, will be free today (Tuesday).

The state Department of Environmental Management issued an an air quality alert for today because of unhealthy levels. A very hot and very humid air mass with west winds will be present at that time, which will lead to unhealthy air conditions. The poor air quality will be due to elevated ground level ozone concentrations. Ozone is a major component of smog and is formed by the photochemical reaction of pollutants emitted by motor vehicles, industry and other sources in the presence of elevated temperatures and sunlight. The DEM recommends people limit car travel and the use of small engines, lawn motors and charcoal lighter fuels. Ozone Alert Issued For Wednesday

All RIPTA routes will be free tomorrow to promote more fuel-efficient travel.

It's not summer in Rhode Island without an ozone alert day. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is predicting air quality will reach unhealthy levels today in the southern half of the state. According to the DEM, conditions will be at their worst in the mid to late afternoon tomorrow as a "very warm and very humid" air mass will be present at that time. Regular RIPTA bus services will be free tomorrow. The Department of Health warns these unhealthy levels of ozone can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to respiratory infection and aggravation of asthma/other respiratory ailments – all worsened by exercise and heavy activity.
