Mercury Discovery Won't Delay Gym Construction

Workers tearing up the old synthetic floor found the toxic element. No students or teachers were in danger.

Narragansett High School must undergo an abatement process after construction in the gymnasium revealed the presense of mercury in the gym floor, the South County Independent reported. No students or teachers were in any danger, the paper reported, and the discovery should not delay the replacement of the gym floor, scheduled to be finished in the fall.  Mercury was once used in a binder in synthetic floors, like the one installed in the high school, Director of Facilities and Maintenance Gary Minett said at a May 15 School Committee meeting, the Independent reported. The abatement process involces placing the gym under negative pressure to remove mercury fumes from the building, he said.  If inhaled, mercury can cause tremors, insomnia, …

Narragansett Town Beach Ready For Summer

Seven months after Superstorm Sandy ravaged the beach, the Town of Narragansett is ready for the 2013 summer season.

In the wake of Superstorm Sandy as images of destroyed beach homes, decimated coastlines and broken roads appeared, many wondered what toll the storm would take on the 2013 summer season. Things looked especially bleak for Narragansett Town Beach, at many cabanas were ruined by the storm surge that also took out the beach's parking lot and damaged Ocean Road and the seawall. Seven months after Sandy swept through the area, Narragansett Director of Parks and Recreation Steve Wright says the beach is ready for the unofficial start of the 2013 season with Memorial Day weekend. “It’s actually looking great down there,” said Wright. “Better than expected.” Wright credits Narragansett’s public works, engineering and parks and recreation …

Beach Goer

5:47 am on Saturday, May 25, 2013

The previous comments are uneducated. The town did not pay for all the repairs to the beach and its facilities. Federal funds and insurance dollars covered some of the costs and the beach enterprise fund covered some of the costs. The Town Council has not rubber stamped all funding requests for the beach. Residents should be thanking the hard working town émigrés who have done the labor to …   more ›

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011.  In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. Narragansett Police: Unwelcome Barfly

The following is based on reports from the Narragansett Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

David Joseph Cheatham, 22, of 1920 S. Club Drive, Wellington, FL, was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of prescription drugs on May 18 after officers were called to Pancho O’Malleys pub for reports of a fight in progress. Cheatham had reportedly been kicked out of the pub for provoking fights with other customers and was allegedly threatening the doorman when police arrived. A quick investigation revealed Cheatham had already been kicked out of nearby Perry’s Bar & Grill and the Mariner Grille for similar behavior, according to reports. He allegedly mentioned having a gun at both bars. Officers found no gun, but allegedly found five Adderall pills for which Cheatham had no prescription. Cleanin' Them Out Patrick John Lepore…
