It says Around Town but the headline is UTAH. Utah is not near Natick!! I think everyone should notRead More open an article on Patch unless they see their town's name in the headline. So If it doesn't say Natick, then we all know it is not LOCAL to the Natick Patch. The less clicks these Patch sites get, the fewer advertisers they will get and then perhaps they will realize if we want sensational news from across the country we'd go back to Patch's former owners AOL and the HuffPost! Those here from other Patch sites - I think you should do the same only click on articles that mention your community's name. No name. No click!

Amazing, 4 years to the date when NK had the last flooding episode. Now that the dam at Feather BedRead More Lane is being fixed after 4 years, the powers to be should seriously consider a partial breach of that dam and the dam at Route 1A because of the amount of water coming out of Bellville Pond. It would seriously help all of the people along that water shed to know that the river is draining and the street drains are working.

Just a question : I've worked with out long time allies in the Royal Navy . How come the British areRead More not involved ?
DK Abbass April 15, 2014 at 12:44 pm
Mr. Badger: Sorry for the delay of this response, but thanks for the question. You should know thatRead More the ships belonged to private owners who chartered them to the British government for the transport service, in order to carry troops to North America during the Revolution. They were not Royal Navy vessels, even the Endeavour, which by that time had been sold out of the Navy to a private owner. When the ships were sunk in Newport in 1778, the owners were paid for their loss, and then the question for RIMAP becomes: What happened to them after that? It is one of the big questions that we are still trying to answer. In any case, when RIMAP discovered that the Lord Sandwich transport had been the Endeavour Bark, the State of RI became especially worried about protecting the fleet, and with the help of the RI Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse (now our junior US Senator), the state took title to the ships in Federal Admiralty Court. If they had been Royal Navy vessels, they would still have belonged to Britain, but the ships were privately owned, and no descendant of the original owners emerged to claim residual rights in their ancestors' property. In the years of RIMAP's research, many individuals in the UK have been interested in our progress, many have joined RIMAP, and many are helpful colleagues. In addition, a number of institutions in the UK have copies of our publications, including the Library at their National Archives, where the documents were found to prove that the Endeavour was in that sunken Newport transport fleet. So the British have always been interested. At present RIMAP is also negotiating a partnership with the Australian National Maritime Museum. Because Cook mapped the east coast of Australia in the Endeavour, that action allowed Britain to claim the continent, and after Britain lost its North American colonies in the American Revolution, she began sending her convicts to Australia. That is why Australia thinks of the Endeavour as their founding vessel, the same way we think of the Mayflower. Patch readers may be interested to know that RIMAP's long-range plans are to celebrate in 2019 the 250th anniversary of Cook's voyage in the Endeavour with the creation of a facility to share these (and other Rhode Island) exciting stories with the general public. The Australian National Maritime Museum also plans a multi-year celebration of that milestone, including sending their replica Endeavour on another around-the-world tour, possibly with a stop in Newport to visit the real Endeavour in the harbor, but it's early days yet for details. Anyone interested in volunteering with us may join RIMAP, take our training, and get involved with what should be an exciting future for Rhode Island and for RIMAP. Please check us out and watch for updates at www.rimap.org.

OK Kathy thanks for the very detailed answer and the time you took to reply to me . I also used toRead More work over @ Newport Naval Base long ago so I certainly do have interest in this discovery of info's on that ship . I am a long time Military historian also so any new data is very welcome here from all branches also . I am going to check your website when things slow down here for me later this afternoon . Maybe I can have some worthy commentary on your project. This has to be one of the better stories I've read on The Patch as it's a very worthy historical event . Take care because we care and do keep up the good work . Cheers from the other side of the Bay .

Yes, it is horrific!!! I watched USSR - fall apart on TV from Pawtucket, RI as a child with minimumRead More knowledge of English. I was born in a republic, now a country, where people are not as brave and bold as Ukrainians!!! Lukashenko rules that corner - already close to 20 years! I say it is time for a change, but if it takes so many lives lost, and, war like atmosphere - I rather let it be and be semi peaceful, very sensored, but at least clean and sort of sufficient. I think, b/c this crisis started during Olympics - those safety scares or terrorist acts never took place. In a way - this distracted attention and was horrific enough. To me - photos shared on FB of Maidan Sq - are realistic war like shots!!! I know enough local families - some from Odessa - who moved to RI, MA, NY in late 80's and early 90's. It is very unnerving to realize that there are relatives and close friends of these people who are stuck in modern day civil war zone!!! I have to say - having this guys summer house exposed - dropped thousands or millions of jaws & we don't know what Lukashenko and Putin have that they don't want us to see. I feel like this is reason Putin is trying yo show power and fearlessness now - as he realizes - what happened to this guy - could - eventually happen to him!!! To think this guy was just some director of a bunch of farms and now in power is little scary - but there are many that say he has done well by them... So, who knows?! My prayers are with people of Ukraine & those who still have friends and family there! Our - President - might be helpless on several levels with Putin. Unfortunately - in several situations - I see he acts as if a puppet... He tells each side what they want to hear in same day and is not stern enough when rules/agreements are broken. This is just my observation & opinion! Thank G-d for my adopted homeland!!! At least here - 8 years is maximum one is in office!!! Though - don't think only in Ukraine - politicians benefit from their posts, put stuff in their 'pockets', gain connections and try to keep things hush-hush!!! Just in some countries or circumstances it is revealed, put to light, exposed -- more so & earlier than others!!!
