This Weekend: Salute to South County, Mews Canoe & Kayak Race and More

Here are just a handful of ideas to kickstart your weekend planning.

Get star struck at the Frosty Drew Observatory's Public Stargazing Night (61 Park Ln., Charlestown), this and every Friday night at 6 p.m. Be sure to subscribe to the Frost Drew Observatory mailing list or follow them on Twitter (@FrostyDrewOBSY) to receive status updates about our public stargazing program. This is a free event, however donations are greatly appreciated.

'Salute to South County' Family Day: On Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the South Kingstown Elks #1899 will host a "Salute to South County" Family Day event at their Lodge, located at 60 Belmont Avenue in Wakefield. Guests will meet and honor local veterans while enjoying gourmet food truck cuisine, climbing the National Guard rock wall, checking out military vehicles, and more! In addition, there will be music, auctions and raffles - something for everyone! A live report from the World War II veterans participating in an honor flight in Washington, DC, during the event in Wakefield will also be a special part of the afternoon. Mardi Garcia at Hank's: From 7-10:30 p.m. on Saturday, stop by Hank's Down South (33 State St., Narragansett) for some world class barbecue and live music from Mardi Garcia and the Astral Seekers. Garcia, a prolific songwriter and TV/radio host is joined by bassist Adam Helmer, lead guitarst Bob Meloccaro and drummer/master percussionist Candido Mendoza, to round out the band. Mardi and the Astral Seekers will provide a fun, upbeat show complete with classic rock, contemporary rock, new folk and original songs! Click here to visit the band's YouTube channel.

Mews Tavern Canoe & Kayak Race: On Sunday, Sept. 29, the Mews Tavern will host its 23rd Annual Canoe & Kayak Race, starting at 12:15 p.m. from the Ocean Mist (895 Matunuck Beach Rd., Wakefield). Prizes will be awarded in many categories and an outdoor party with brews and food await participants at the finish line behind the Mews (456 Main St., Wakefield). Registration is $10 and opens at 10 a.m. the day of the race at the Ocean Mist. A $20 donation will be accepted for non-participants who wish to join the post-race party. Wakefield Jazz at The Contemporary: This and each Sunday from 2-5 p.m., The Contemporary Theater Company, located at 327 Main Street in Wakefield, will host "Wakefield Jazz Sessions". The weekly event invites local musicians to bring their instrument and jam with a house band and fellow jazz musicians. Cost is $5 per person. Click here to view the the event page on Facebook.
