This Weekend: DuVal Trail Hike, End of Summer Festivals and More

Here are just a handful of ideas to kickstart your weekend planning.

Get star struck at the Frosty Drew Observatory's Public Stargazing Night (61 Park Ln., Charlestown), this and every Friday night at 6 p.m. Be sure to subscribe to the Frost Drew Observatory mailing list or follow them on Twitter (@FrostyDrewOBSY) to receive status updates about our public stargazing program. This is a free event, however donations are greatly appreciated.

Ninigret Harvest Festival: From 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, Ninigret Park in Charlestown will host its annual Harvest Festival. Enjoy family fun, live music, art & crafts vendors and food. There will be plenty of free activities including hayrides, pumpkin painting, beading, a wood workshop and much more! A horseshoe tournament at 11:15 a.m. and fishing derby at 2:15 p.m. are also scheduled. Donation/admission is $5 for adults, children under 12 free. Proceeds to benefit the Charlestown Community Garden. All produce will be donated to local food banks.

PBR Fishing Tourney Celebration: An awards ceremony and celebration will take place on Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at the Ocean Mist in Matunuck. It will conclude the 2013 Pabst Blue Ribbon Northeast Striped Bass and Fluke Tournament. Click here for more info about the ceremony and the tournament itself!

DuVal Trail Hike: On Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m., the South Kingstown Land Trust will host a hike of DuVal Trail in Perryville. At this RI Land Trust Days event, local lichen expert Elizabeth Kneiper will teach participants to identify and understand the role of lichens in nature, and explain what the organisms tell us about the health of our environment. If possible, bring along a small magnifying glass. The trek along DuVal's hilly, scenic terrain will take approximately two hours to complete. Click here for more details.

Dog Day Afternoon: From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Courthouse Center for the Arts (3481 Kingstown Rd., West Kingston), enjoy live music from Johnny & The East Coast Rockers at the 1st Annual Dog Day Afternoon! The event acts as a fundraiser for the Richmond Dog Park, and will feature contests, a dunk tank, live music, vendors and more! Click here for additional information.

Narragansett Summer's End Festival: This Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce will hold its 11th Annual Summer's End Festival at Narragansett Town Beach. The rain or shine event will feature an outdoor concert, kite flying demo, food and beverage vendors and a merchant marketplace. Admission is free.  $5.00 per vehicle parking donation in designated lots.
