Monday Essentials: MLK Holiday, URI Study Abroad and More

Today is Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 and here are some things to know about the week ahead.

MLK Day: Due to Monday's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday, schools and all municipal, state and federal offices are closed. Click here for a complete rundown of what's closed in and around town today.

Free Movie Tuesday: From 2-4:15 p.m. and again from 6-8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Narragansett Public Library (25 Kingstown Road) will host a free showing of this year's film, "Captain Phillips" (PG-13). The movie is based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US flagged MV Maersk Alabama, which was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. (Starring: Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi.)

Ballroom Dance Lessons: Tonight and each Wednesday evening year-round, The Towers in Narragansett offers ballroom dance lessons led by instructors Sara Barker and Sue Davis. Ballroom lessons are held at 6 and 7 p.m., Tango at 8 p.m., followed by an open practice for all from 9-10:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per person for Ballroom or Tango, or $22 per person for a full evening. Click here for more information.

Study Abroad Info: From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, Amanda Lord, a representative from The Education Abroad Network (TEAN) will be at Booth 1 in the URI Memorial Union to provide students with information on semester, year and short-term study abroad options in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Men's Over-35 Drop in B-Ball: Looking to have some fun and let loose some stress? Join your peers for recreational fun and good basketball supervised by Glenn Miller, each Friday through Mar. 14 from 7-9 p.m. at Peace Dale Elementary School (109 Kersey Rd, Peace Dale)  All ability levels are welcome and everyone plays.Note: Program does not meet when school is not in session. $2 per session.
