Monday Essentials: Gansett Town Council, Radical Reels and More

Today is Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 and here are some things to know about the week ahead.

Gansett Council Meeting: The Narragansett Town Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Town Hall (25 Fifth Ave., Narragansett). Click here to view tonight's agenda. At 8 p.m., a public hearing will be held to discuss a license request which would allow the Boston Neck Road Shell Station to operate 24 hours a day. Click here for more information.

Free Star Trek Screening: From 2-4 p.m. and again from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, Narragansett Public Library (25 Kingstown Road) will host a free showing of this year's sci-fi blockbuster, "Star Trek - Into Darkness" (PG-13). The movie tells the story of when the Enterprise crew is called back home, and finds that an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving the world in a state of crisis. (Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana). 

Radical Reels 2013: On Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., sponsors Denali and Merrell will host The 2013 Radical Reels Tour in Edwards Auditorium at the URI. The tour, now in its tenth year, features adrenaline-packed films that showcase more than half a dozen wild action sports as seen through the eyes of today's top athletes and adventure sport filmmakers. Tickets are $15 per person. Proceeds will benefit the URI Outing Club. Click here for ticket info and to RSVP.

Business After Hours: From 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, the United Chambers of Southern RI (Charlestown, North Kingstown, Westerly-Pawcatuck, Block Island and Narragansett Chambers of Commerce) will host a joint Business After Hours at the Christian Brothers Conference Center, located at 635 Ocean Rd., Narragansett. Star Gazing at Frosty Drew Observatory:  At 6 p.m. on Fridays during fall and winter and shortly after dusk during spring and summer, head to the Frosty Drew Observatory in Ninigret Park in Charlestown. See the stars, our moon, the planets and their moons, distant galaxies, and maybe a passing comet, through a big telescope. Weather permitting. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.
