Scarborough State Beach Reopened to Swimming

Scarborough is one of three town beaches reopened for swimming Friday by the Dept. of Health.

Officials from the RI Dept. of Health have recommended the re-opening of Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett to swimming after it was closed Thursday due to high bacteria counts.

Also reopened to swimming are City Park Beach and Conimicut Point Beach, both in Warwick, which were ordered closed along with Scarborough on Thursday. Currently all licensed beaches in the state are open for swimming.

This recommendation is based on results from water samples that show bacteria levels within acceptable limits. The Health Dept. will continue to monitor the water quality regularly to assure its safety.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Department of Health maintains ongoing testing of local swimming areas for Enterococci bacteria, which can show the presence of fecal matter in the water. Any reading above 104 colony forming units, or cfu, per 100 milliliters of salt water triggers an alert.

NOTE: Beach statuses may change on a daily basis. For up-to-date information about swimming at Rhode Island beaches, call (401) 222-2751 or visit www.health.ri.gov/beaches to use HEALTH’s interactive beach map.
