Scarborough State Beach Closed to Swimming Due to High Bacteria Counts

Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett is one of three RI beaches closed to swimming as of Thursday afternoon due to bacteria levels.

The Rhode Island Department of Health announced Thursday afternoon that waters at Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett, City Park Beach in Warwick, Conimicut Point Beach in Warwick are currently unsuitable for swimming due to high bacteria counts.

Officials will make a recommendation regarding suitability for swimming when the areas are determined to be safe.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Department of Health maintains ongoing testing of local swimming areas for Enterococci bacteria, which can show the presence of fecal matter in the water. Any reading above 104 colony forming units, or cfu, per 100 milliliters of salt water triggers an alert.

NOTE: Beach statuses may change on a daily basis. For up-to-date information about swimming at Rhode Island beaches, call (401) 222-2751 or visit www.health.ri.gov/beaches to use HEALTH’s interactive beach map.
